ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: June 13, 2006 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. ~_ <br />SUBJECT: Contract Renewal with Town of Chapel Hill for County Provision of Animal <br />Control and Emergency Animal Rescue Services (EARS) <br />DEPARTMENT: Animal Services Department PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Renewal Contract Bob Marotto, 986-2287 <br />PURPOSE: Ta approve a contract renewal to provide the Town of Chapel Hill with animal <br />control and emergency animal rescue services during FY 2006-2007. <br />BACKGROUND: The proposed contract renewal has been developed by Animal Services and <br />reviewed in coordination and consultation with Budget and the Town of Chapel Hill to provide <br />for the continuation of animal control services and emergency animal rescue services by the <br />County to the Town from July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007, There is no change in the level <br />of service, <br />An Animal Control Officer is housed at the Shelter whose principal responsibilities are the <br />enforcement of the Town's animal control ordinance within the Town limits, including the <br />response to animal control emergencies within the Town that occur Monday through Friday <br />between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p,m. <br />Under this contract, EARS workers will respond to animal injuries, animal cruelty, animal <br />rescue, animals in need of assistance, rabies suspects, and all other emergency calls in the <br />Town limits of Chapel Hill after regular hours of service (that is, from 6:00 p,m. to 9:00 a,m,) <br />Monday through Friday, and 24 hours on Saturday and Sunday and Holidays, <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: The proposed contract renewal would provide revenue to the County in <br />the amount of $75,000 for FY 2006-2007. This is an increase to the Town of $3,188 <br />attributable to rising costs in fuel, vehicle maintenance, and adjustments in pay and benefits <br />chiefly associated with the Animal Control function. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board authorize the Chair to <br />sign the contract renewal with the Town of Chapel Hill for Animal Control Services and <br />Emergency Animal Rescue Services in the amount of $75,000, pending final review by staff and <br />the County Attorney, <br />
