POLICY #: 4.16 PAGE 1 OF 4 <br />POLICY TITLE: MEDICAL CART PROCEDURES g~ <br />DATE: MARCH 16, 2004 <br />RELATED N.C. <br />STANDARDS: .15A-266:1 <br />POLICY STATEMENT: In order to comply with North Carolina Generai Statutes, <br />members of the Orange County Sheriffs Office assigned the duty of administering <br />medicines prescribed by our contracted medical professional shall be trained in <br />achninistering medicines and record keeping of medicines administered to inmates housed in <br />the Orange County Jail. Our med passers shall be responsible for preparing the med cart, <br />which is used to store and transport medicines to inmates in cellblocks. Med passers <br />assigned to the medical office to assist our contracted medical professional are solely <br />responsible for preparation and maintenance of the med cart. <br />SPECIFIC PROCEDURES: Preparation and maintenance for the medical cart: <br />The first duty and responsibility of everyone that administers medicine from the med cart is to <br />keep the cart organized for distribution, neat and clean. By doing so the med cart will at all <br />times remain in order for everyone that has to administer medicines. Anyone who fails to <br />comply with this directive is subject to disciplinary action. <br />Before organizing the med cart, it is imperative that the jail log is reviewed to insure that all <br />_, inmates who are to be administered medicines are: (1) in the jail and have not been released <br />or transferred to another jail or (2) are not in court. <br />Preparing the lbled Cart: <br />1. When preparing the med cart or when receiving medication for an inmate to be placed <br />in the cart, <br />a. The med passer will check the medicine label and compare the name with the MAR <br />book (it is important to know we have the correct name) <br />b. The med passer shall check the inmates M.AR record to insure the medicine received is <br />the medicine to be administered. (it is important to know we have the correct medicine) <br />2. The med passer shall place a computer copy of the inmates' photo and name on each <br />medicine card or medicine container. (per directive for this duty) <br />THE MED CART IS ORGANIZED AS FOLLOWS: <br />I. On the top left side of the cart there is a small trash bin attached to the cart FOR'I'RASH. <br />As meds are administered, all wrappings or any litter shall be deposited in the trash bin. <br />Upon rehuning the med cart to the med office the med passer shall empty the trash bin for the <br />next round of meds. <br />2. Below the trash bin there is a SHARPS CONTAINER. <br />It is most important that all needles and other sharp instnrments used by med passers or inmates, <br />after injectio:rs, aze placed in the SHARPS container <br />No med passer shall ever place any needle on the cart in any manner whereby another med passer <br />might accidentally get cut or scratched by a needle or sharp instrument, <br />
