POLICY #: 4,15 PAGE 2 OF 7 <br />Duties and responsibilities of the afternoon shift Med Passer: -7 <br />_ 5, Narcotic Drug Count r~ <br />a. Narcotic count is required as outlined below.. <br />1, When an inmate has narcotic medications on the cart to be administered. Narcotic count should <br />be done when a mad passer arrives for a new shift with Shift Supervisor, with the presentloff-going <br />mad passer and when mad passer ends shift at night with shift Supervisor. <br />2. When an inmate is being transferred out to DOC, or FEDERAL inmate is transported AND his/her <br />narcotic medication needs to go with him/her. The mad passer shall document the narcotic count of <br />the inmate with the Shift Supervisor/Med passer. Each will initial the MAR narcotic control sheet to <br />validate their count. <br />3. When a narcotic medication comes into the Jail it should be counted and documented by 2 Med <br />Passers or a Med Passer and Shift Supervisor, If ft is approved by a Provider to be administered it <br />should be documented on the narcotic count sheet and counted as i'rsted above. If it is not <br />approved for administration it should be counted, count documented and sealed with tamper proof <br />seal. Daily count of that medication should corrtinue until destroyed or inmate releasedttransferred <br />out. <br />4 When narcotic medication is designated £or destruction. <br />5.When destroying narcotic drugs. (they shall be destroyed only under supervision of the Jail <br />Administrator or Detention Supervisor and will be documented on the back of the MAR.) <br />6. Glucose Monitoring/Insulin administration. <br />• In the frorrt of the MAR Logbook the list of inmates requiring glucose monRoring or Insulin <br />administration should be reviewed.. <br />• The Med Passer will take the Glucose Monitoring tray {containing jail approved supplies and those <br />appropriate for testing,) to each cell where the inmate will be tested and/or administered insulin. <br />Inmates requiring testing/insulin administration will be identified by their arm band. <br />• Blood sugar readings will be obtained and documented on the MAR. <br />• Inmates requiring insulin administration will be given an alcohol pad and pre-filled syringe with <br />appropriate dose/type of insulin. The inmate will administer the insulin and return the used syringe <br />to the mad passer for proper disposal. <br />• The mad passer will document administration of the insulin on the MAR. <br />The mad passer will ensure all used supplies are removed from the cell and property disposed, <br />7. MAR Log and Med cart <br />The Med Passer is to check the MAR book before leaving the medical room to ensure the MARS are <br />in alphabetical order by Inmate name and have Inmate photo/identification sticker attached. <br />Med Passer shall check MAR's and ensure changeslupdates are reflected on the MAR. <br />Changes/updates of Treatments should also be reflected on the MAR. New Diabetic inmates should <br />also be added to Glucose Monitoring list if applicable. <br />• The drawers of the medication cart are clearly marked Annex and Old Jaii. Each drawer shall have <br />all drug cards filed by Cell Block clearly marked with each inmate's name in alphabetical order. <br />Medication cards should follow in order as listed on the MAR and shall have each inmate's <br />photo/identification attached. <br />8. Lunch 8 Dinner Medication Administration <br />Before leaving the medication room for medication administration, the Med Passer shall <br />prepare the medication cart with necessary supplies. <br />Med Passer will enter their LD. button in the medication probe before the medication pass.. <br />Time of entry and exit of each cell by the Med Passer will be documented by this probe. <br />• When administering any drug to an inmate, the inmate shall approach the Med Passer and <br />display his/her photo-identification arm band. The arm band is to be viewed for verification <br />of inmate to receive medication. If an Inmate does not have an arm band, the Shift <br />Supervisor is to be notified for their intervention. Medications are not to be administered to <br />Inmates without Photaidentification arm bands. The mad passer will administer all tablets <br />and capsules by pouring the medication from a medication cup into the inmate's hand. <br />Disposable medication paper cups may be given to the inmate when administering <br />medication. <br />• The mad passer will ensure that the Inmate swallows the administered medication. <br />The mad passer will administer inhalants by the ordered administration method. <br />
