ORANGE COUNTY JAIL <br />144 E, Margaret Lane <br />Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278 <br />POLICY #: 4,15 <br />~3 <br />PAGE 1 OF 7 <br />POLICY TITLE: Duties and Responsibilities of Orange County Jail Med Passers <br />DATE: JULY 7, 2004 <br />RELATED N.C. <br />STANDARDS .24Q3; .2701 <br />POLICY STATEMENT: In order to properly administer medications to inmates confined in <br />the Orange County Jail the following responsibilities and duties shall be followed as prescribed. <br />To provide a safeguard against the improper passing of medications to inmates confined in the <br />Orange County Jail, detention officers assigned to this duty shall attend and complete the State <br />of North Carolina Med Technician Course. <br />SPECIFIC PROGEDURES: <br />Duties and Responsibilities of the Afternoon Shift Med Passer: <br />The 1000 a.m. to 1800 p. m. Med Passer is scheduled to work daytime Monday thru Friday, eight (8) hours <br />daily. This schedule is subject to change based on the need for the Morning Med Passer to work other hours <br />when needed to cover another med passer who may be out sick, on vacation or in schooh NOTE: Onty <br />"pre-approved" overtime approved by the Lieutenant will be considered for comp or paid time. All <br />unapproved overtime will not be tolerated. <br />1. Med passer will report for duty on time, mentally prepared and physically alert to perform <br />assigned duties. <br />2. Briefing wkh Duty Supervisor. <br />Verbal briefing with the Morning Med Passer of any unusual medical incidents. <br />• Transportation of an Inmate to and from the hospital, <br />The Emergency Department Physicians medical report on the Inmate should be filed in the inmate's <br />medical record and Inmate's medical record should be placed in Jaii Health Provider's box for <br />review. <br />• Med passer will receive any Inmate medical request or Intake fdnms when logged in the medical <br />fonms/request log, initial/date/and time as required. <br />• Med passer will also check the Inmate medical formslrequest log and receive any Inmate medical <br />requests that have been made during the Moming shift. <br />• Med passer will check the form(s) to ascertain if any need immediate attention <br />• Med passer will place the Intake forms with charts if applicable in the To Be Reviewed Box, The Jail <br />Health Provider shall be informed of any significant health information, <br />3. Inmate GeII Assignment <br />a. The Med Passer will view the Inmate Boarl in the control room for Inmate cell <br />assignments. <br />b. Check jail log printout for any inmates that have been released or moved from previous cell <br />assignment. <br />b. Remove any MAR from the MAR Book and medication from the cart of Inmates that have <br />been released. <br />4. Red Book Review <br />-_ • The Red book is to be located in the center of the desk next to the telephone in the medical office., <br />It is crucial to checc the red book each day for information being left by the day and night shifts. <br />• Important information should be documented here for communication to oncoming shifts, <br />
