Margaret Lane <br />Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278 <br />POLICY #: 4.15 <br />PAGE 1 OF 8 <br />POLICY TITLE: Duties and Responsibilities of Orange County Jail Med Passers <br />DATE: JULY 7, 2004 <br />RELATED N.C, <br />STANDARDS 2403; .2701 <br />~n5 <br />POLICY STATEMENT: In order to properly administer medications to inmates confined in <br />the Orange County Jail the following responsibilities and duties shall be followed as prescribed. <br />T~o provide a safeguard against the improper passing of medications to inmates confined in the <br />Orange County Jail, detention officers assigned to this duty shall attend and complete the State <br />of North Carolina Med Technician Course. <br />SPECIFIC PROCEDURES: <br />Duties and responsibilRies of the morning daytime shift Med Passer: <br />The 0530 a.m. to 1330 p.m, Med Passer is scheduled to work mornings Monday thru Friday, eight <br />(8) hours daily. This schedule is subject to change based on the need for the moming med passer <br />to work other hours when needed to cover another Med Passer who may be out sick, on vacation <br />or in school, NOTE: Only "pre-approved" overtime approved by the Lieutenant will be <br />- considered for comp or paid time. All unapproved overtime will not be tolerated. <br />Med passer will report for duty on time, mentally prepared and physically alert to <br />perform assigned duties. <br />2. Briefing with Duty Supervisor. <br />• Verbal briefing with the Duty Supervisor of any unusual medical incidents, <br />• Transportation of an inmate to and from the hospital, <br />• The Emergency Department Physicians medical report on the Inmate should be filed in the <br />inmate's medical record and Inmate's medical record should be placed in ,Jail Health <br />Provider's box for review. <br />• Med passer will receive any Inmate medical request or Intake forms when logged in the <br />medical forms/request log, initiaUdate/and time as required. <br />• Med passer will also check the Inmate medical forms/request log and receive arry Inmate <br />medical requests that have been made during the night shift. If coming in on Monday <br />moming the med passer will check the inmate medical forms/request log for all that have <br />been listed over the weekend and read the medical red book notes. The med passer will <br />familiarize themselves with any medical or medication issues that have occurred over the <br />weekend. <br />• Med passer will check the form(s) to ascertain if any need immediate attention <br />• Med passer will place the Intake farms with charts if applicable in the To Be Reviewed <br />Box. The ,tail Health Provider shall be informed of any significant health information. <br />
