~~ <br />POLICY 4.11, "ACQUIRED IMMUNE DEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS)" <br />PAGE 2 OF 8 - <br />2, Definitions: "ttie following definitions will be used throughout this policy: <br />A, "AIDS": Aids is a fatal disease with no known cure.. Aids affect an individual's <br />ability to fight off disease and, therefore, permits the contraction of other diseases and <br />illnesses that can cause serious illness and death. <br />B. "Asymptomatic": A person who is infected with HIV but show none of the signs <br />or symptoms with the infection or with AIDS. <br />C. "Human Immune Virus (HIV)": The virus that causes AIDS. <br />D. "High Risk Behavior": Any behavior or activity that may involve the exchange <br />of blood or body fluids. All sexual contact is considered high-risk behavior,. <br />E. "HIV POSITIVE or HIV (+)": A person who is infected with the HIV infection. <br />- Same as asymptomatic and as symptomatic. <br />F. "Symptomatic": A person who is infected with HIV and has begun or has the <br />physical symptoms associated with AIDS, to include, excessive weight loss, night sweats, <br />diarrhea, recurrent fevers, and fatigue. <br />G. "LJniversal Precautions": All actions required to be taken by ,jail officers to <br />prevent transmitting infections, to include, wearing disposable rubber gloves when <br />handling or coming in contact with blood or body fluids. <br />3. AIDS Policy Development: <br />A. The Jail Administrator will be responsible for the annual review and revision, if <br />necessary of this policy, Changes may be made to this policy at any time that new <br />information concerning AIDS is received that may change the scope of the information <br />contained in this policy. <br />B. The initial AIDS policy and any changes made to the same will be required to be <br />submitted to the contract health care physician for review and subsequent signanue <br />Upon his/her review, the ,Tail Administrator will be responsible for forwarding this policy <br />to the Health Department for approval. Signature blocks for the contract health care <br />-- physician and Health Department official have been provided at the end of this policy for <br />this purpose. <br />
