Margaret Lane <br />Iiillsborough, North Carolina 2727$ <br />PAGE 1 OF 8 <br />POLICY #: 4.11 <br />POLICY TITLE: ACQUIRED INQvIUNE DEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS) <br />DATE: 7C1LY 1, 2003 <br />RELATED N.C, <br />STANDARDS: .2403 (a) ($); .32Q1; .3202 <br />POLICY STATEMENT: In an effort to promote and protect the health, well-being, <br />safety and welfare of inmates and staff of the Orange County Jail, jail detention officers will <br />ensure, to the extent possible, that reasonable steps aze taken to prevent the spread of AIDS/HIV <br />among inmates and staff To this ends, the facility will ensure that all detention officers receive <br />training during their first year of employment relative to AIDS and the ways in which it can be <br />transmitted. Jail detention officers will periodically receive information relative to AIDS and <br />HIV infection during their course of employment, As a rule, all detention officers employed by <br />the facility will be required to follow universal safety precautions in order to prevent the <br />infection and spread of AIDS/HN disease. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL ANY <br />INMATE BE SECsREGATED OR TRANSFERRED SOLELY BECAIJSE THEY ARE <br />INFECTED WITH AIDS OR HIV. An detention officer found to have revealed that an <br />inmate is HIV infected or has AIDS will be subiect to discinlinarv action. <br />SPECIFIC PROCEDITRES: <br />1. Training: <br />A. All jail detention officers will receive immediately upon employment, basic <br />' training concerning AIDS and HN infection; the transmission of these diseases; and, the <br />universal safety precautions necessary to be followed to prated against possible <br />transmission. This training will be conducted during the State Mandated Basic Jail <br />Certification School. <br />B. In addition to the above, all jail detention ofCcers will be required to read and <br />become familiaz with the contents of this policy during their first week of employment, <br />(~, The receipt of alt training will be documented pursuant to the procedures outlined <br />in Orange County Jail Policy 1.04, "Employee Training." <br />D, Tail detention officers will be provided with information relative to the AIDS and <br />HIV infection periodically throughout the course of their employment. Jail detention <br />officers will be required to sign for receipt of such material and for signing that they have <br />read and understand all information pros~ided them (see Attachment #1). As required by <br />state statute, the County Health Department or a representative should provide this <br />training thereof <br />
