Margaret Lane <br />Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278 <br />POLICY #: 4,10 <br />POLICY TIT'I,E: SUICIDAL INMATES <br />DATE: JULY 1, 2003 <br />RELATED N.C. <br />STANDARDS: 2403 (a) (8); .2801; 3201 <br />PAGE 1 OF 3 <br />POLICY STATEMENT: Jail detention officers will make a reasonable effort to protect <br />inmates who are believed or felt to be potential suicide risks. To this end, Orange County Jail <br />officials will ensure that all ,jail detention officers receive training and instruction relative to the <br />detection of inmates posing a potential suicide risk and that adequate prevention steps are taken <br />by detention officers to provide for the safety of such inmates, <br />SPECIFIC PROCEDURES: <br />1, Jail detention officers will have a short orientation within the first 30 days of employment <br />for suicidal behavior, universal precautions and communicable diseases, Additional training will <br />continue their fast year of employment to detect the signs, This training will be conducted <br />during Basic Jail Certification School and will be documented pursuant to the guidelines <br />outlined in Orange County Jail Policy 1,04, "Employee Training" <br />2, Procedures to be Followed Should an Inmate be Deemed a Suicide Risk: <br />A. Upon admission to the facility, all inmates will be screened to assess their <br />potential to commit suicide. This screening will be conducted during the admission <br />process by the admitting officer and the booking officer and will be documented on an <br />"Inmate Medical Screening Report," (see Attachment #1, questions #4). See also, <br />Orange County Jail Policy 2.11, "Preliminary Health Screening"), Any inmate deemed <br />to pose a suicide risk will be immediately brought to the attention of the Lieutenant and <br />the Jail Administrator. <br />B. Inmates confined to the facility will be observed during security rounds by .jail <br />detention officers, Any inmate who exhibits any signs or symptoms suggesting that <br />he/she may pose a threat of suicide will immediately be brought to the attention of the <br />Lieutenant and the Jail Administrator. <br />
