3~ <br />POLICY 4.09, "ADMINISTRATION AND CONTROL OF MEDICATIONS" <br />PAGE 6 OF 9 <br />B Individuals Authorized to Prescribe and Order Medication. <br />1. The following individuals will be the only persons authorized to prescribe <br />medications to inmates confined to the facility: <br />a. Prescribing physician <br />b. Prescribing dentist; <br />c. Attending physician at the local hospital to which an inmate may have <br />been transported for care/treatment. <br />d. Detention Med Passers when receiving drrect orders from a medical <br />professional may (FAX-) the medical professionals written medication <br />orders to our Pharmacy Supplier. (The med passer is only faxing an order <br />prescribed by medical professionals) <br />C Preparation and Distribution of Medications to Inmates <br />Certified Med Passers (Detention Personnel who have attended and passed the <br />State Medication Administration for Unlicensed Personnel course of instruction <br />provided North Carolina Community College System.) shall be responsible for <br />preparing medicines and for administering medicines to inmates. <br />Monday through Friday the designated med passers assigned to work in the <br />medical office shall administer all inmate medications. The hours of assigned duty <br />shall begin at 0600 and end at 2200 hours <br />On Saturday and Sunday each shift on duty shall have a designated med passer, <br />who shall assume the duties of the off duty med.. Passers. (Certified Med Passers <br />are Detention Personnel who have attended and passed the State Medication <br />Administration for Unlicensed Personnel course of instruction provided North <br />Carolina Community College System.) <br />1. It shall be the duty and responsibility of the shift supervisor to ensure only <br />those authorized perform this duty. Only one (1) .jail officer, Facility Medical <br />Personnel or shift supervisor per shift will be authorized to ADMINISTER <br />prescriptive medications to inmates. <br />2. At the begimiing of each shift, designated medicine ADMINISTERING <br />detention officers will be responsible for reviewing the Medical Drug Log to <br />determine which inmates will require medications during their shift. <br />3- The designated medicine-administering officers will ensure that all inmates <br />requiring medications receive the same at the prescribed tune and in the proper <br />dosage. <br />
