ORANC>E COUNTY JAIL <br />144E Margazet Lane <br />Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278 <br />POLICY #: <br />POLICY TITLE <br />DATE. <br />RELATED N.C. <br />STANDARDS. <br />4 09 <br />33 <br />PAGE 1 OF 9 <br />ADMINISTRATION AND CONTROL OF MEDICATIONS <br />JULY 1, 2003 <br />2403 (a) (8), 3201 (b (4) <br />POLICY STATEMENT: Policies and procedures of the Orange County Jail are designed to promote <br />and protect the health, safety and well-being of inmates All employees of the detention facility shall be <br />cognizant of the fact that all medications; whether non-prescriptive or prescriptive shall be <br />administered and stored at the facility in a manner that reflects these policies' and objectives Jail <br />detention officers shall be aware that it is not within the scope of their job duties and responsibilities to <br />recommend or prescribe any type of medication to inmates; (at no time shall a detention officer take it <br />upon him/her self to do so If this is found to have occurred the detention officer faces severe <br />disciplinary action including and up to dismissal) Rather, their role is to administer medications to <br />inmates that have been prescribed or recommended under the attending contract medical <br />professionals direct written orders. Further no detention officer shall ANYTIME at the request <br />of any inmate, administer non-prescriptive medications. When any inmate makes such a request <br />for ibuprofen or tylenol the on duty supervisor shall (tell the inmate as soon as we can get <br />approval) contact our contracted medical professional or EMS for approval. If approved to be <br />administered to the inmate it shall be recorded on the inmate's medical form for the medical <br />professional to review and place in the inmate's medical record. This is required and shall done <br />for each and every instance. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL ANY INMATE HOUSED AT <br />THE FACILITY BE ALLOWED TO POSSESS, ADMINISTER ANY MEDICATZONS FOR EITHER. <br />THEMSELVES OR OTHERS. <br />SPECIFIC PROCEDURES: <br />1. Non-Prescriptive Medications: <br />A, Storage and Maintenance: <br />1 All non-prescriptive medications will be stored and maintained in a locked <br />cabinet located within medical room and stored and maintained by the facility <br />medical professional in the medical office. <br />2. The shift supervisor will bezesponsible for ensuring that non-prescriptive <br />medications are maintained in the medical room and further it shall be the <br />responsibility of the medical professionals to ensure adequate supply of <br />medications is on hand for the jail facility. <br />3. The facility medical professional shall periodically inspect the supply of <br />non prescription medications for expiration dates of non- prescriptive medications <br />and replenish those medications needed. <br />
