ORANGE COUNTY JAIL <br />144E Margaret Lane <br />Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278 <br />POLICY #: <br />POLICY TITLE: <br />DATE: <br />RELATED N.C. <br />STANDARDS: <br />4.06 <br />DENTAL CARE <br />JULY 1, 2003 <br />.240.3 (a) (8); ..3201 <br />a3 <br />PAGE 1 OF 2 <br />POLICY STATEMENT: In order to protect the general health and welfare of inmates <br />confined to the Ckange County Jail, the facility will provide for the medical supervision of all <br />inmates.. To this end, the Orange County Jail will arrange for dental care services to be provided <br />by a licensed dentist when an inmate has a need for emergency dental care treatment/services. <br />SPECIFIC PROCEDURES: <br />1. Dental care services shall be afforded inmates in need of emergency treatment/services <br />-- by a licensed dentist contracted by Orange County to provide the same to inmates housed in the <br />facility. <br />2. Dentat Gaze services will be limited to emergency fillings and dental extractions only. <br />3. Access to Dental Care Services: <br />A. Should a detention officer detect or receive a dental complaint from an inmate that <br />he/she is suffering from a dental ailment (e g., severe swelling of the facial azea or gums; <br />broken or damaged teeth; severe pain, etc.), the detention officer will immediately <br />contact the control room detention officer and notify him/her of the problem. <br />B. The Control Room detention officer shall be responsible for contacting the on duty <br />shift supervisor and/or Lieutenant. The shift supervisor and/or Lieutenant will be <br />responsible for contacting the coritract dentist and explaining the inmates' symptoms so <br />that a determination can be made as to whether the uunate will need to be transported to <br />the dental office for treatment/caze. <br />C Should a determination be made that the inmate requires transportation to the <br />dentist's office or treatment, jail detention officers shall follow the procedures outlined in <br />Orange County Jail Policy 4.13,"Transportation of Inmates for Medical Care," to carry <br />out this process. <br />
