Margaret Lane <br />Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278 <br />POLICY #: 4.05 <br />POLICY TITLE: EMERGENCY MEDICAL PLAN <br />DATE: JULY 1, 200.3 <br />RELATED N.C. <br />STANDARDS: .2403 (a) (8); .3201 <br />(G <br />PAGE 1 OF 4 <br />POLICY STATEMENT: In order to ensure that the health care needs of inmates <br />housed at the Orange County Jail are met on a continuous basis, the facility will provide 24-hour <br />emergency medical care services through our contracted medical professional, or Emergency <br />Medical Services (EMS,). The facility will, at all times, ensure that medical services aze <br />available on a 24-hour basis, First aid kits will also be available within the facility to allow <br />officers to provide any needed services until such a time a medical professional (s) arrive at the <br />facility. All jail detention officers will be trained in emergency first aid techniques and in the <br />detection of the signs and symptoms that may suggest a medical emergency. <br />SPECIFIC PROCEDURES: <br />1. Training: All jail detention officers employed by the Orange County .Jail will be <br />instructed/trained in the following areas during their first year of employment: <br />A. Emergency First Aid and CPR: All detention officers during their first yeaz of <br />employment will be trained in the areas of emergency fust aid and CPR. techniques.. It <br />will be the responsibility of the .Tail Administrator to coordinate and schedule this <br />training, <br />B. Detection of Medical Emergencies: All detention officers will be trained to detect <br />the signs and symptoms of medical emergencies to include, but not be limited to, the <br />following areas: <br />1, Signs of unconsciousness or semi-consciousness; <br />2. Signs of alcohol or drug intoxication; <br />3. Signs of severe bleeding; <br />4. Signs/symptoms of serious breathing difficulties; <br />5. Signs/symptoms of serious head injury; <br />6 Signs of severe bums; <br />7. Signs/symptoms of severe pain; <br />8. Signs of suicide risk; and, <br />9. Signs/symptoms of pregnancy or problems/complications. <br />
