Margaret Lane <br />Hillsborough, North Cazolina 27278 <br />POLICY #: 4 04 <br />13 <br />PAGE 1 OF 4 <br />POLICY TITLE: ROUTINE MEDICAL CARE OF INMATES (NON- <br />EMERGENCY) <br />DATE: JULY 1, 2003 <br />RELATED N.C. <br />STANDARDS: .2403 (a) (8); .3201 <br />POLICY STATEMENT: In order to promote the health and well being of inmates <br />confined to the Orange County Jail, detention officials will ensure that qualified health caze <br />professionals are available to provide needed routine medical services and treatment to inmates <br />on a regularly scheduled basis and as needed. Routine medical caze shall be provided to inmates <br />daily as needed upon an inmate's request or when an emergency exists or upon the request of a <br />.jail detention officer who has cause to believe an inmate needs medical assistance or care. <br />SPECIFIC PROCEDURES: <br />1. The Orange County Tail shall ensure that qualified professional medical care providers <br />are available on a 24 hr, basis. Our' contracted medical provider shall provide 24-hour service <br />either by phone or in person. The contracted medical providers shall have a schedule for routine <br />non-emergency needs for inmates. The medical providers shall schedule three (3) days, or more <br />if needed.. If an emer~ency or need arises on days the medical provider is not scheduled to <br />be in the fail The contracted medical provider shall be available for detention officers to <br />call on call medical provider or call the medical providers office and obtain an <br />appointment for transport of the inmate to the medical providers office. The medical <br />providers schedule _will be given to the med passers and the Detention Lieutenant. The <br />contracted medical professional shall remain in the Detention Center on these specified days <br />until all inmates' medical needs are evaluated. Further after 1700 hours and nn weekends the <br />contracted medical professional or qualified medical person shall be designated and available. L <br />list of phone numbers FOR AFTER HOURS CONTACTS shall be posted in the control <br />room for detention shift supervisors). <br />2 Should an emergency azise which cannot be attended to during the day by the contracted <br />medical provider, Orange County EMS shall be called and requested to respond. Upon azrival <br />should the EMS provider not be able to caze for the inmate's medical needs and after <br />examination of the inmate advises or directs the Jail Detention Supervisor "that the inmate <br />should be transported to UNGChapel Hill Hospital" we shall immediately do so either by <br />ambulance or patrol vehicle. <br />
