We believe this in-
school program will help nurture participatory retention and also develop a larger
community base for growth, creativity, and collaboration, Next year, we hope to work with
three school partners for this series, including at least one Orange County school program,
• Oral History Trust and Neighborhood Soundwalk
Our ongoing oral history initiatives with long-time residents of this County fuel and deepen
our education work. Our oral histories are held in the "Northside Memory Project" archive,
which is utilized for our workshops and ongoing educational work, Additionally, we have
produced a Northside Soundwalk, an audio-documentary-tour featuring fifteen oral histories
of the neighborhood & civil rights struggle. This audio-tour orients hundreds of young
people each year to learn about the history, transformation, and vision for our community,
e) Describe the community need or problem to be addressed in relation to the various
community priorities (i.e. Council/Board Goals), Reference local data (using the provided
links) to support the need for this program.
The mission for equity work is a core value and substantive need expressed in both the Human
Services Needs Assessment and Orange County BOCC Goals and Priorities. The need for
"quality, equitable education for everyonel," "diversity and education at all levels2," and a reduction
in the "achievement gap, school-to-prison pipeline3" and additional discrepancies along racial
lines' are all priorities encapsulated within this equitable framework, Throughout the country,
educators are working to address the ever-growing achievement gap that occurs primarily
between low-income students of color and their more affluent white peers. Having one of the most
egregious achievement gaps in the US, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School District had only 31%
of black students and 40% of Latina students pass end-of-grade and end-of-course tests in 2015-
2016 versus 85% of their white counterparts. Additionally, when spending time in classrooms
around Orange County, these deficits are fairly easy to spot. Our education programming address
this critical need by:
• Increasina community eneaoement through the connection of primarily low-income
youth and youth of color with mentors in the community to which they can relate. Our
utilization of community mentors directly addresses the need for youth support and
connectedness via mentors and advisors' as well,
• tilizi • culturall relevant and rzslionsive teachi • !ractic- by integrating relevant
local history, facilitating reflective dialogue to assess dimensions of power and social'
justice issues, and developing engaging activities to aid in the student's learning
experience,
Chapel Hill Human Services Needs Assessment
2 Orange County BOCC Goals and Priorities
3 Orange County BOCC Goals and Priorities
4 Chapel Hill Human Services Needs Assessment
5 Chapel Hill Human Services Needs Assessment
PROGRAM INFORMATION 1/31/2017 10:50:57 AM
