10
policies regarding concussions; and reports submitted on an annual basis to monitor the issue
closely.
James Barrett said the CHCCS board reviewed a concussion policy last week, and
noted that it is not just a question of returning to play the sport, but being able to return to
learn. He said CHCCS is also monitoring this issue closely.
Joal Broun said the UNC team studying the concussion issue is a voluntary program,
and is testing soccer players.
Commissioner Jacobs said after football, soccer is the number one sport for
concussions for boys, and soccer is the number one sport for girls.
Dr. Todd Wirt said last year in OCS, lacrosse was the sport with the most concussions.
He said OCS partnered with the UNC study over a year ago, and has helmets from them. He
said some of the helmets have probes in them to track data.
Commissioner Rich said this could be another follow up item.
Commissioner Burroughs said there was an argument a while back that some kids
attend school in order play football, and may stop attending if football is taken away.
Dr. Todd Wirt said OCS has not had a discussion about dissolving football. He said
there is much more training for high school football coaches now than years ago.
Dr. Pamela Baldwin said CHCCS has not had in depth discussions, except to the
extent of what is occurring naturally. She said she has spoken with coaches about the
connection that sports can create with students who may not otherwise be excited about
school.
Commissioner McKee said there are a lot of kids for whom sports gives an extra push
to do better in school.
James Barrett recognized Commissioner Price and other school board members that
attended the Pre-K conference.
8.
