Disability Employment Awareness Month Proclamation <br /> The Board considered voting to approve a proclamation designating October 2017 as <br /> Disability Employment Awareness Month, and authorizing the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> Tyran Fennell, Human Resources Manager, said she is here on behalf of Brenda <br /> Bartholomew, Human Resources Director, and is joined by Johnny Burnette and Thelma Cox <br /> from Vocational Rehabilitation. <br /> Tyran Fennell reviewed the background information below: <br /> BACKGROUND: <br /> October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Persons with disabilities have <br /> skills, talents, and dreams, and with respect and acceptance, individuals with disabilities — <br /> mental or physical — can participate in society and the work force to their fullest capacity. <br /> Workplaces welcoming of the talents of all people, including people with disabilities, are a <br /> critical part of Orange County efforts to build an inclusive community and strong economy. <br /> Commissioner McKee read the proclamation: <br /> ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS PROCLAMATION <br /> DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH <br /> OCTOBER 2017 <br /> WHEREAS, October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month; and <br /> WHEREAS, workplaces welcoming of the talents of all people, including people with <br /> disabilities, are a critical part of our efforts to build an inclusive community and strong <br /> economy; and <br /> WHEREAS, the United States Department of Labor has designated October as National <br /> Disability Employment Awareness Month to bring greater awareness to the many contributions <br /> people with disabilities make daily to all communities; and <br /> WHEREAS, Orange County recognizes that persons with disabilities offer the workplace great <br /> talent and we cannot afford to overlook or not use to their talents to the highest potential; and <br /> WHEREAS, Orange County believes diversity in the workforce is reflective of our community's <br /> commitment to inclusivity; <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim <br /> October 2017 as Disability Employment Awareness Month and encourage employers, schools <br /> and other community organizations in Orange County to advance its important message that <br /> people with disabilities are equal to the task throughout the year. <br />
