19 Statewide MST Master Plan • Commissioned by State Parks in 2014 • Plan identified corridors ("swath") for MST • Orange County o Segment 11: Alamance to Occoneechee Mtn o Segment 12: Occoneechee Mtn to Durham Segment 11 Corridor • Up Cane Creek, around Cane Creek Reservoir • Northeast to Seven Mile Creek • Connects to Occoneechee Mtn Trails • Segment 12 - Route Largely Identified Challenges of Segment 11 • Stretch with no natural features to follow • Crosses over the Neuse/Cape Fear basin boundary ("cross-country") • Southernmost section of Cane Creek winds across county line Trail Route Planning Process • Board instructs staff to develop community meetings to gather info & identify route(s) • Three community meetings between April 2016 and March 2017 • Facilitator-led meetings on info-sharing and draft trail routes and next steps OWASA Consideration of MST • OWASA Board reviewed and considered possible use of OWASA land at Cane Creek Reservoir as per statewide plan • Board discussed possible conditions for use on June 23 and August 25 • Conditions adopted on August 25 • Public comments — at www.owasa.org Creating a Proposed Route • Staff worked over winter to look at all comments, master plan and conditions • Identified a "Proposed Route" • Also identified two alternates and a "Multi-Modal Trail" • Work with willing landowners Proposed MST Segment 11 Map 11-A: Occoneechee Mountain to Seven Mile Creek 11-B: Seven Mile Creek to Bradshaw Quarry Road 11-C: Bradshaw Quarry Road to NC 54 11-D: NC 54 to Alamance County line Possible First Steps • State priority is on expanding existing sections of trail • Expanding Riverwalk from Hillsborough • Connect to Seven Mile Creek (possible trailhead and waystation)
