4 <br /> 1 Commissioner Burroughs said the search for the Board of Health (BOH) Director is <br /> 2 ongoing. <br /> 3 Commissioner Burroughs said during the light rail (LRT) discussion last spring, she was <br /> 4 struck by the number of passionate, yet civil, advocates for the cause. She said WCHL may do <br /> 5 a follow up piece, or an award to recognize those people. <br /> 6 Commissioner Rich said the search for a new Solid Waste Director has begun. She <br /> 7 thanked Orange County Schools (OCS) and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) for <br /> 8 their work over the summer for banning hateful images on school property. She thanked the <br /> 9 Sheriff's office for its work at the Silent Sam protest on UNC Campus. <br /> 10 Commissioner Price said she attended the National Association of Counties (NACo) <br /> 11 conference in Ohio, and Orange County received an award for achievements in solar energy. <br /> 12 Commissioner Price said NACo's theme this year is "Ending the Cycle of Poverty". <br /> 13 Commissioner Price said she attended the North Carolina Association of County <br /> 14 Commissioners (NCACC) annual conference, and their theme this year will be to "Let Children <br /> 15 Thrive". <br /> 16 Commissioner Price suggested that the Board review the NCACC stewardship report, <br /> 17 especially near budget season. <br /> 18 Commissioner Price said she is on the Community, Economic and Workforce <br /> 19 Development steering committee, which is focusing on getting funds for CDBG, HOME and <br /> 20 affordable housing. <br /> 21 Commissioner Jacobs said the aforementioned petition on the rural buffer is part of a <br /> 22 larger agreement, the Joint Planning Agreement (JPA), which is not well understood by many. <br /> 23 Commissioner Jacobs said they also talked about a petition for tree preservation, and <br /> 24 passed out information about the Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks and <br /> 25 Recreation's (DEAPR) policy on this issue. He asked that this come back and get fully adopted <br /> 26 by the County. <br /> 27 Commissioner Jacobs referred to Mr. Myers' concerns, and said there has been a goal <br /> 28 of partnering the economic development office with any business applicant, in order to navigate <br /> 29 any difficulties in obtaining permits, etc. He said local businesses should not be put through <br /> 30 such frustrations. <br /> 31 Commissioner Jacobs said he hoped that there would be additional signs posted upon <br /> 32 entering the Rural Buffer in Orange County in the near future. <br /> 33 Commissioner Jacobs said there will be a meeting with Durham staff and elected <br /> 34 officials in October, to discuss economic opportunities around rail stations. He asked Chair <br /> 35 Dorosin to write a letter to the Town of Chapel Hill, because it seems to be going ahead with <br /> 36 planning around the Gateway Station without Orange or Durham County. <br /> 37 Commissioner Jacobs referred to public access on public lands, and asked if an update <br /> 38 could be provided regarding signage around the County, besides the Greene Tract. <br /> 39 Commissioner Jacobs said the first agricultural summit planning meeting was held <br /> 40 today. <br /> 41 Commissioner Jacobs said the Sportsplex expansion groundbreaking occurred this <br /> 42 evening. <br /> 43 Commissioner McKee complimented Chair Dorosin and Commissioner Jacobs on their <br /> 44 comments at the Sportsplex groundbreaking. <br /> 45 Commissioner McKee attended a community meeting in Cedar Grove last week about <br /> 46 community concerns over land use issues. He said these meetings are helpful, and he <br /> 47 encouraged residents to attend and participate in Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) <br /> 48 meetings. <br /> 49 Chair Dorosin said he will be bringing forth a petition to take a public position on the <br /> 50 potential elimination of the Deferred Action on Child Arrivals (DACA), as well as the Dreamers. <br />
