r~
who were in attendance, Yoko Crume with the N.C. Division of Aging and Jan Wassel who also is a
demographer, He also thanked Joan Pellettier ,Triangle JCOG who provided information about older adults
and where they live. He has also been working with Bob Bacon of Triangle J COG. We are looking at the
distribution of older adults of 65+ who live alone, who live in poverty and who are minority,
Ann Johnson hopes that all of the subcommittees will include in their discussion what we will need if we have a
disaster for the population they are reporting on. Jerry Passmore said that we are be looking at the new centers
as potential emergency centers (backup generators) when a disaster occurs, Alice Gordon stated that we also
need evacuation procedures for everyone, but especially for seniors. Barry Jacobs said that now that Shazon
Harris is going to expand, we may push for more regional planning, Linda Tuday mentioned the United Way
and .Joan Pellettier, TJCOG are working on putting in a regional proposal on disaster planning from funds
available from Blue Cross-Blue Shield. Ann .Johnson indicated that it was important for everyone who lives
alone has some communication with another human being. We could establish a buddy system at little expense,
Jerry asked which GIS maps they liked the best -small or big dots, The larger dot means a bigger
concentration of people. They decided they liked both, He made reference to a township map which shows the
spread of people within each township. The township of Chapel Hill (includes towns of Carrboro and Chapel
Hill) has the highest concentration of 65+ which is 59% of total older county population. When you add the
township of Hillsborough with 13% (includes the town of Hillsborough), we get 72% of atl older adults 65+ in
the county, The next highest township is Efland-Cheeks with 8%, Jerry Passmore discussed the issues of
people 85+, living alone, and poverty distribution within the county. He said that seniors in the rural areas
should not be forgotten as it relates to these demographics, Ann Johnson indicated the need to look at family
support in rural and urban settings. Jerry Passmore indicated that the demographic information will be given to
the subcommittees, Linda Tuday felt that trends ate what are really important. The growth areas aze in
Hillsborough and Efland Cheeks because there is not any available laud in Chapel Hilh Jerry Passmore that we
can get overall population projection trends, but more difficult within the county, The LTS Census snap shot is
every ten yeazs.
Barry Jacobs said that a lot of the senior growth in Efland Cheeks is coming out of Town of Mebane, The
County Commissioners are trying to improve their relationship with Mebane officials. They need to know that
they have an impact on senior services in Orange County.
Jerry Passmore went over the future projected meeting dates. In the process, once the County Commissioners
approve the draft M.A,P,, we will have public meetings for citizen input, We then will go to the towns to
present the plan for review and comment, Mebane will be included in the input process.
Jan Wassel wanted to know the percentage of the older population in each township to its total population in
order to better identify aging issues. Yoko Crume agreed to research it and report back, Also, institutional
enrollment in each township.
Jerry said that we aze concerned about the baby boomers. He asked what other demographic information the
steering committee would like, Ann Johnson asked how many older adults aze grandparents raising
grandchildren, Barry Jacobs asked to look at trends for 1995, 2000, 2005 and prgjections for 2010. The
Planning Dept. may have these figures,
Oranee County as Senior Friendly Community
Ann Johnson indicated that there was awards for developing a senior friendly community? Maybe Orange
County could research and apply to win one, Pat Sprigg directed everyone attention to the manual (section 3) to
review the Senior Friendly information chart, the Powerpoint presentation and 6 key issues, health and support
Page 5 of 8
