a
Barry Jacobs said that a lot has changed since the last MAP was developed and we need to utilize these
resources to meet the unmet objectives. Examples, Durham Tech is opening up a satellite campus. We need to
talk to them about a eazeer ladder for care providers. The County will provide computers at the new senior
centers, We now have an Affordable Housing Advisory Board, so we can invite their chair to one of our
meetings and tell them what we need. There is an affordable housing trust fund setup now and we need to look
at how it can help low income seniors with urgent housing repairs. We need to know what resources are now
available which were not available before.
Florence Soltys highlighted other issues such as County Commissioners endorsing the'recognition of
outstanding programs for elders, living wage, expansion of Friend to Friend program, more adult care
homes which will accept special assistance (one opened in Oct. in Hillsborough). This could lead to
partnering with I.)NC and UNC hospitals on developing anon-profit long term care nursing home.
Alice Gordon expressed that one big theme is helping seniors to age in place and helping them with
resources to stay in their homes and transitions. Once they reach the point of needing assistance it should be
available. We need to look at things through the perspective of seniors.
Barry Jacobs said that new federal legislature has been approved for financial disclosiu•e for moving people into
nursing homes and we need to find out what this means.
To the issue of aging in place, Jerry Passmore said that the Senior Centers are not just a place for active
older adults activities, but are individual service centers. Eldercare services is a part of this for the frail
adults who are dealing with transitional issues. This is a critical element we must provide and communicate
that senior centers are full service centers.
Pat Sprigg continued highlighting the M.A,P. report since Florence Soltys had to leave, She indicated that the
dental service objective is still active and efforts aze underway to bring new life to it, The next Goal (IVB)
raised was Orange Count being a model county which addresses the residents' rights. quality of caze and
quality of life in long term care facilities. Pat Sprigg indicated this goal needs further attention especially the
adult care homes (Assisted hiving) and their increase growth in meeting the needs. Following on Barry
Jacobs remarks, Pat Sprigg indicated a major work of the committee is knowing what has been done,
Next area was the Baby boomer goal NA) to develogpror?rams and services for future older persons that
promote personal responsibility for their health and well beingand utilize their skills and talents. None of the
objectives were accomplished to lack of staff time and resources, Pat Sprigg indicated that this is a huge issue
that needs to be approached in a proactive and preventive way due to the tremendous growth in this population.
Jan Wassel stated that she hoped that these objectives can be revisited and revised that would focus on baby
boomers not just a volunteer resource, but as a work force issue.
The last t*oal (VIA) mentioned was the planning, administration and coordination of aging services. Pat Sprigg
indicated that we need to adopt a formalized evaluation program to understand we are getting for the
resources we are putting in and where are the unmet needs. (Performance measures) She hopes the task
force will look at what has transpired, and whether the priorities identified in the past are still important goals,
Review Uadate Profile of Older Adults
Jerry Passmore wallced them through the profile, He distributed two profiles of older adults in Orange County -
GIS maps. There were two versions, Additional information will be forthcoming. He recognized the experts
Page 4 of 8
