Steering Committee held a meeting on Apri120, 2006 at the Homestead Community <br />Center on Homestead Road in Chapel Hill at 10:30 a.m, <br />PRESENT: The list of those present is attached to these minutes. The list includes members, <br />staff and visitors. <br />MEETING OBJECTIVE: Complete the agenda from March 2.3, 2006 with breakout groups on four key <br />areas to identify and prioritize issues <br />Florence Soltys welcomed everyone to the meeting. <br />1. Breakout GrOUAS on Four Key Areas to Identi and Prioritize Issues that affect alt older <br />adults and are not covered ~ subcommittees (60 minutes) <br />A, Housing -facilitator/resource -Jack Chestnut/Taza Fikes <br />B. Transportation -facilitator/resource - Al Terry/Jerry Passmore <br />C, Information/Access -facilitator/resource -Janice Tyler/I{atherine Leith <br />I). Community Transitional Care -facilitator/resource -Florence Soltys/Pat Sprigg <br />2. Reports from Breakout Groins on Priori Issues (30 minutes) <br />A. Approve priority issues for submission to BOCC for approval <br />HOUSING <br />• Possibility of affordable housing for seniors north and west of Hillsborough <br />• What is water supply? Sewer <br />• Idea of "rural villages with services"/Shaping the Future of Orange County (needs to be <br />explored further) <br />• Mecklenberg County's "Strategic Planning Report" (Senior Friendly Mecklenberg) -good <br />example of what can be done <br />• Property Tax breaks or deferments for elderly to age in place (Must be statewide) <br />• Lien onproperty -Heirs? Reverse Mortgages <br />• Medicaid/Medicaze dollar is shrinking <br />• Services need to be community~based <br />• Should senior housing developers provide on-site services? <br />• Need support services in newly-planned communities (especially in rural azeas) <br />• Lack of incentives by and for developers <br />• Need education/forums on how to "age in place" (need public support) <br />d• If "aging in place" services need to support this, plan for high concentration azeas <br />• Transportation is needed for elders in rural azeas who aze "aging in place" <br />• What does it take to "age in place" <br />• Need to identify volunteers/others in the community who aze able & willing to do repairs <br />on homes and to upgrade structures to accommodate increase in disability (churches, etc.) <br />• We da not have to reinvent the wheel.
