s1 <br />Life is transitional not static and beyond the formal transitions <br />within institutions, one moves to changes within the community. <br />Two areas that serve as one move fiom self care to dependent care <br />are (a) Protective services (b) Guardianship. <br />A sudden acute illness such as a major stroke followed by <br />depression and or dementia may trigger the need for guardianship. <br />If the burden of care giving (without adequate support) becomes <br />overwhelming because of dementia, protective services may be <br />needed. <br />These services may be needed for short or long term. Being <br />familiar with the services acrd how to access are crucial. <br />The statute concerning protective services was recently revisited <br />and updated. Hopefully, the guardianship statue will receive the <br />same scrutiny with a recently proposed bill in the legislature. <br />
