a~ <br />Objective #22: Maximize existing opportunities in RSVP, Volunteer Orange, Peer Learning, <br />Shared Learning, Village Elders by providing transportation from senior housing to senior <br />centers. (Goal I-A) <br />Comment: Lack of resources. <br />Objective #23: Provide shelters and benches at all OPT pick-up/drop-off locations.(Goal I-A) <br />Strategy: Institute a sponsorship program that encourages businesses and other <br />orgaiuzations to donate shelters acid benches (which will display their names <br />in recognition of the donation), OPT will also seek NCDOT funds. <br />Comment: Lack of staff time and resources.. <br />GOAL I-B: To have each older person in Orange County perceived as and <br />valued for his/her uniqueness. <br />Accomplishments -Education & Societal Attitude <br />Objective #24: Establish a local television program ("In Praise of Age") to develop and air a <br />minimum of two programs per month portraying seniors in a positive light, (Goal I-B) <br />Accomplishment: In spring, 2000, the "In Praise of Age"weekly TV program was <br />established with a group older adults and graduate student who helped coordinate this new <br />initiative.. In July, 2001 the program expanded its sponsorship and funding with Carol Woods <br />and the Friends of the Chapel Hi115enior Center. In addition, the Aging Director and <br />graduate student have expanded to four program tapings a month on a variety of informative <br />topics, <br />Objective #25: Work with local newspapers to print a minimum of one feature article per <br />month on older persons, their contributions and accomplishments. (Goal I-B) <br />Accomplishment: Regular, feature articles have been written monthly by OCL1oA <br />staff, often highlighting programs.. The information and assistance specialist writes a <br />monthly column, for• the Chapel Hill Herald. She regularly includes information and <br />positive messages about aging. <br />Objective #26: Develop increased opportunities for L1NC Health Professionals to be <br />exposed to aging through senior centers, (Goal I-B) <br />Accomplishment: Fldercme staff provides fteld placements for occupational therapy <br />students and MSW students with concentrations in aging. UNC School of Nursing places <br />with the Wellness Program first and second year students in their community nurse rotation. <br />Unmet Objectives-Education & Societal Attitude <br />Objective #27: Obtain commitment from a minimum of three county and/or state <br />educational and aging institutes and associations to provide annual training and continuing <br />education unit credits (CEUs) for programs that educate service providers on the strengths of <br />older persons and how to maximize their contributions.
