I'f~
community, everyone else had to live well. They really need businesses and the younger aged population
to support this because it is community driven because there is such a broad array of issues. They aze
putting together a web page for better senior practices. As of this morning, they have a new state logo for
livable and senior friendly communities and she encouraged this group to use a logo to promote this idea.
Jack Chestnut said that the senior friendly conununity logo bothers him. He feels it should be
an easy living design because the same obstacles are there for a young mother with a child. If a developer
concentrates only on senior friendly, the intergenerational aspect is last. There will be senior only homes
and the seniors will be isolated in one location which is not what we want,
Yoko Crume said she was just offering the use of the logo and the word livable was added so
that it would be intergenerational. It is a compromise.
Gwen Harvey said that there maybe some confusion between the NORR (Natural Occurring
Retirement Community) which is a concept in design of a physical community - a neighborhood. She
rmderstands that this is more of a conscious approach of looking at how other County departtnents can be
aware of how they too can contribute to supporting senior planning to help all of us as we age in our
conununities, She made reference to the economic development priority and being able to provide
support for small businesses and provide a range of services for people who want to age in place. She
said that Dr..Ian Wassel with iJNCG is sponsoring a Silver Industry Conference in April because they see
with the growth in the number of seniors who are well-fit and not improvised a lot of dunking power but
with needs and issues that they want businesses to be able to respond to and cater to. Gwen Harvey
continued saying that one thing this reminds her of is the concept of conservation and what can be done to
be more energy efficient.. The Environment Resource Conservation Department is putting together an
action committee to look at what all the County departtnents can do to help be good stewazds of
resources.
Yolm Crume said that in Cumberland County today, they aze having their big living and
friendly senior center conference which is jointly sponsored by their Aging Deparhnent and Planning
Department. This is being used as a vehicle to get the word out about senior friendly communities. At
the heart of this initiative is that they (T.1COG) are involved in this process.
Cazol Gunther-Mohr made a motion that the MAP Steering Committee engage Orange County
government in the process of all County departtnents looking at all issues that the Steering Committee is
addressing acrd perhaps identify the Senior Friendly Livable Conmrunity program as a mechanism to do
that.
Ann .Iolmson said that this does put the responsibility for development on the County
Commissioners which would make some sense because it is broad and it also helps the Department on
Aging and anyone who volunteers solely in aging to think in terms of our expertise to be used in anyway
to assure that older peoples needs are going to be heard, respected and meant in some fashion. This
motion is a way to see the broader picture but saving for the Deparhnent on Aging energy -the aging
portion of it. Ann Johnson made an amendment that the County Commissioners set it up to include other
things and this was included in the main motion.
Jack Chestnut said that there is a large development being built at Waterstone - 800 homes. If
it is easier for retail to also be included, it could be made friendly for everybody. The County through
their Planning Department could assure this mix of homes and retail.
Bazry Jacobs noted that this development is in the Town of Hillsborough who has very little
knowledge about these kinds of issues. The County Commissioners have an Assembly of Governments
meeting in September and he can put the MAP update on the agenda as one of the items for discussion..
Alice Gordon said that it is important to make it broad. The Chamber of Commerce and the
other entities should be involved. Also, the overall livable concept needs to be emphasized for Senior
Friendly Communities. When they were nanring the new senior center on Homestead Road, they decided
Page7of8
