AGENCY INFORMATION (Be Very Brief and Concise) Please provide the following information about your agency (2 pages OR LESS): • Years in Operation, Date of Incorporation (Month/Year): The HHC is a statutory commission established in 1963 by the NC General Assembly and incorporated in January 1964. • Agency's Purpose/Mission: The mission of the HHC, as stated in its bylaws, is "To maintain and preserve the Burwell School Historic Site; to interpret the history of 19th Century Hillsborough for the enrichment of the public; and to celebrate and promote the culture and heritage of Hillsborough and Orange County." • Types of Services the Agency Provides (bullet format): • Visitor Services: showcasing the historic importance of the property, its residents, its role in women's education, and the lives of the Burwell School's students and residents – Burwells, Elizabeth , the Collins family, and 200+ young women who attended the School. • Operation and maintenance of the 200 year old property • Events management in cooperation with local agencies and organizations • Volunteer opportunities and community cooperation to bring underserved populations into the site. • • Agency's History with Providing These Services: The Burwell School has provided unique cultural, historic and educational services to the citizens of Hillsborough and Orange County since 1974. Over those years the extent and depth of the programming has increased as have the numbers of visitors and participants, now averaging about 5,000 per year. The Historic Hillsborough Commission has conducted its business as a non-profit agency with uninterrupted and impeccable dedication to the stewardship of the property and the role that this historic place has in the life of the community, and seeks always to serve all populations and bring the important history of 199' century Hillsborough and Orange County alive to all. • Other Pertinent Agency Information (Ex. Has the agency experienced any major changes in the past year? is there a new Executive Director?Are there new initiatives?) • There have not been major changes in the past year, apart from increasing visitor counts and the expansion of programming and, important maintenance to the property. However, planning is beginning for an important major NEW initiative in 2018— an observance of the bicentennial of the birth of Elizabeth Hobbs . The Burwell School is one of the only places remaining intact where this important historical figure lived, and our goal is to create events and exhibits that will bring widespread attention to her story as well as increase the number of visitors to Orange County.
