The <br /> enrollment at Phillips is 851 children, serving 6th to 8th grade students. The school <br /> offers the core curriculum classes with students in each grade having two electives per <br /> semester. A sample of these electives includes foreign languages such as Spanish, <br /> French, Latin and Advanced Mandarin; Exploring Life Skills; Exploring Family and <br /> Consumer Sciences; Video Production; Ceramics and Sculpture; Visual Arts; Band and <br /> Orchestra. The school also offers programs in Exceptional Education, Gifted Education <br /> and English as a Second Language. <br /> Phillips has a diverse racial composition: White (51%), Asian (19%), Black (12%), <br /> Hispanic (10%), Multi-Racial (7%) and American Indian/Alaskan Native (<1%) Twenty- <br /> five percent of Phillips students .re eligible for free and reduced lunches. <br /> School Arts Programs <br /> The PTSA Cultural Enrichment Committee promotes the cultural arts in education by <br /> bringing a variety of professional artists to perform at our school. Led by Professor Pierce Freelon, hip-hop <br /> and jazz quartet The Beast told the history of Africa,-American music through an <br /> interactive performance that included original songs as well as standards from the <br /> spiritual, blues, jazz and hip-hop cannon. The dancers of the NCYTE <br /> engaged students with a dynamic, educational and inspiring program featuring rhythmic <br /> dance from a variety of genres as well as some drumming and singing.
