Winner performs in
concert with the orchestra in May. Runners-up read their repertoire with the orchestra
in rehearsal.
• February 25, 2018: A classical concert featuring Respighi's "Fountains of Rome"and
with guest soloist Anna Lampidis performing Mozart's Oboe Concerto.
• May 6, 2018: A classical concert featuring Dvorak's Symphony#6 and the winner of
the 2018 Young Artists Competition.
• Summer 2018: Chamber music concerts with members of the Cl-IF.
Proposed Uses of Grant Funds
The grant is requested for the October children's program, partially covering costs for
seven weekly rehearsals, the dress rehearsal, and the concert. This year's program is centered
around the narrated composition"The Composer is Dead", with music by Nathaniel Stookey
and story by Daniel Handler, aka Lemony Snicket. The piece introduces the various
instruments of the orchestra in the context of a mystery investigation featuring the
characteristic dark humor of Lemony Snicket. Like Prokofiev's"Peter and the Wolf',the
piece is a deft mixture of entertainment and musical education. Premiered by the San
Francisco Symphony in 2006, "The Composer Is Dead" has since been performed by major
orchestras across the United States. TbeCHP has a special connection to the composer—
Stookey lived in Chapel Hill in the early 2000's and was a member of the orchestra's second
violin section.
Guest conductor Andrew McAfee initiated the first children's program in 2007 and it
has been an annual event since 2009. Past concerts have included works such as Rossini's
"William Tell Overture", Saint-Saens's"Carnival of the Animals", and Britten's"Young
Person's Guide to the Orchestra". The orchestra also mixes in contemporary music like John
Williams's"Harry Potter" and Klaus Badelt's "Pirates of the Caribbean". Though the theme
of the concert varies from year to year, the goal is always to inspire, educate, and entertain
young listeners. The children's concert traditionally draws the CHP's most diverse
audiences, evenly split between elementary-school-aged children and adults.
The October program will be held in the informal space of Kenan Rehearsal Hall,
allowing the audience of 250-300 people close access to the orchestra. Because the concert is
free, the audience is socio-economically diverse, offering a live music experience to many
who cannot afford a traditional classical concert. The dress rehearsal (on Saturday morning)
is also open to the public.
Grant funds have been requested to help pay the salary of the music director, a harpist,
rental costs for performance and rehearsal venues, and rental costs for the music. Remaining
expenses for the p ject(not covered by the grant request) include program printing costs and
salaries of the technical staff.
The orchestra pursues a low-cost approach to publicity for our programs, using word-
of-nuoutb, flyco, 00|iuuco|cudurs, novvspoperliodnDo, oue+nui| |ist, dhe PeachJar school
calendar, and social media to promote our events.
The CUP does not have a formal process for evaluating our concerts. However, the
main thrust of the orchestra's efforts during the year is continuous improvement for both
individuals and the ensemble. The group makes archive recordings of each concert, allowing
musicians the chance to assess their performance.
