Winner performs in
concert with the orchestra in May. Runners-up read their repertoire with the orchestra
in rehearsal.
• February 25, 2010: A classical concert featuring Respighi's"Fountains of Rome"and
with guest soloist Anna Lampidis performing Mozart's Oboe Concerto (see below).
• May 6, 2018: A classical concert featuring Dvorak's Symphony#7 and the winner of
the 2018 Young Artists Competition.
• Summer 2018: Chamber music concerts with members of the CHP.
Proposed Uses of Grant Funds
The grant is requested for our February program, partially covering costs for six
weekly rehearsals, the dress rehearsal, and the concert. The February program provides an
opportunity for the orchestra to perform with a professional guest artist selected by the music
director. Working with a soloist offers the chance for the group to reach for higher standards
of performance both in terms of technical polish and musical expression. Past soloists
include hornists Kimberly van Pelt and Kurt Kellan;trumpeter Tim Hudson; cimbalom player
Petra Berenyi; pianists Barbara Rowan, Fritz Whang, Elizabeth Tomlin, Greg McCallum,
Thomas Otten, and Dana Protopopescu; saxophonist Matthew McClure; clarinetist Donald
Oehler; and violinist Yoram Youngerman. OCAC grants have been used to partially fund
trumpeter Paul Neebe; violinist Jennifer Curtis; and singers&rseuiu0ciok)e, Marc Callahan,
Fischer, Eugene Galvin, Melissa Martin, Jay Pierson, Emily Scheuring,
and Timothy
Sparks.
Our soloist for February, Dr. Anna Lampidis, is on the faculty of the UNC
Department of Music. In addition to her teaching duties, [Jr. Lampidis is an established artist
actively performing all over the world (see Artist Profiles). The CUP offers its soloists a
small honorarium of$1000 for their services. Along with the scheduled concerto, the
orchestra will perform Respighi's"Fountains of Rome", one of the seminal classical
compositions of the 2/ y century.
The concert will be held in Moeser Auditorium, with an estimated audience of 250-
300 people. Because the program is free, the audience is socio-economically diverse,
offering a live music experience to many who cannot afford a traditional classical concert.
The dress rehearsal (on Saturday morning) is also open to the public, serving those with
children who may feel uncomfortable in a more formal concert setting and those who are
unable to attend an evening concert.. A modest free reception follows the concert, giving a
chance for the audience to meet the musicians.
Grant funds have been requested to help pay the salary of the music director, rental
costs for the use of UNC Music Department facilities, stipends for harpists, and an
honorarium for the soloist. Remaining expenses for the p 'ect(not covered by the grant
0 include program printing costs, salaries of technical staff, and reception costs.
The
nf-ruoutb flyers, online calendars, newspaper lisitings, an e-mail list, and social media to
promote our events.
The CHP does not have a formal process for evaluati our concerts. However, the
main thrust of the orchestra's efforts during the year is continuous improvement for both
individuals and the ensemble. The group makes archive recordings of each concert, allowing
musicians the chance to assess their performance.
