We will leach basic painting and
drawing techniques, as these skills will help participants to express and communicate thoughts
and feelings.
The goal is to stimulate the participant's visual language, teamwork, and the sharing of family
and personal stories. This activity will generate conversations about different topics such as
cultural background, traditions, immigration, family trips, social issues, etc. Learning about our
n-ighbcrs' stories is an exchange that will help to improve the relationship between the
members of the Hillsborough community.
Inspired by Folk and Popular arts, we want people to paint their stories, creating contemporary
narratives. Painting tells stories, documents events or communicates ideas. As well, it serves to
build the cultural imagery of nations. For this reason, wherever we go, we take with us the forms
and colors of where we come from. These are part of our identity and therefore it is necessary
to share them.
We want to motivate frequent attendance, as more hours dedicated to the making of art will
make the pieces of better quality, and the participants will have access to more hours of painting
practice. The weekly workshop will be in English but will also provide bilingual assistance for
Spanish speakers. As well, we want to extend the scope of the workshop by adapting the
classes and artwork to celebrations and important historical datr,s during the year, such as the
Day of the Dead, 4th of July, Labor Day, holidays, etc.
