The Arts Center has a very successful School Show Series that ties in with
curriculum, and all students participating in the Artist in Residence program come to The
Arts Center's theater to see shows directly linked to what they are learning in their classrooms.
The School Show Series is open to all schools for field trips, so often times students from many
different counties are in attendance. Before the shows begin, the Artist in Residence program is
promoted so other schools are aware of residency offerings. The School Show Series is also
publicized through a color poster that is disseminated to all area schools, and the Artist in
Residence program is highlighted on the poster.
To keep parents and families informed about the program, letters are sent home to parents prior
to the start of residencies explaining the art focus and curriculum goals. The letters also invite
parents to come observe the last session so they can gain a better understanding of the
experience. Teachers and PTAs also include information about the residencies in their
classroom and school newsletters.
Finally, teachers often times host 'parent nights' to coincide with residencies as a way to
showcase what students have learned. For example, students may perform a play for families or
have their artwork from a residency on display. In addition, Orange County Schools hosts a
district-wide event every Spring called Cultural Explosion, which is a free event for students and
families that includes student performances, interactive culturally-themed booths and
demonstrations, community organizations and international food vendors. Every year, several
grade levels from schools participating in the Artist in Residence program take part in Cultural
Explosion either by hosting booths displaying created work or participating in on-stage
performances. This past year, kindergarten students from Central Elementary and first/second
grade students from New Hope Elementary performed dances and songs they learned during
their art residencies earlier in the year. Central Elementary students performed "The Rhinoceros
Tap," an African tap dance, and New Hope Elementary students performed an interpretation of
"Did You See Jackie Robinson Hit That Ball?"
Project Evaluation
The Artist in Residence program will be evaluated qualitatively through student and teacher
evaluations administered by The Arts Center. These evaluations will assess the effectiveness of
the program in regard to student engagement, ability to understand covered curriculum
concepts and ease of planning. The Arts Center's Arts in Education Coordinator will also meet
with all teachers following the residencies for evaluation sessions, where they will discuss
strengths of the program, impacts they observed and areas to be improved in the future.
Teachers will assess students' understanding of curriculum through pre and post tests before
and following residencies, as well as informal assessments.
