DocuSign Envelope ID:B3B563FD-6D63-4031-A74C-538395FA5A15
As part of the program, all students in grades K-5 at New Hope Elementary, Central
Elementary, Efland-Cheeks Global Elementary and Grady Brown Elementary will participate in
Arts-Based Learning Experiences (ABLE) residencies, which are five-day residencies designed
around a School Show students see at The ArtsCenter, Planning for the residencies will begin at
the start of the school year when teachers choose School Shows they would like their grade
level to attend, as well as the art focus for their residencies. The Arts in Education Coordinator
for The ArtsCenter will then secure teaching artists for the residencies and serve as a liaison
between classroom teachers and artists to ensure the residencies run smoothly. Prior to the
start of the residencies, classroom teachers, teaching artists and The ArtsCenter's Arts in
Education Coordinator will meet for planning sessions to collaborate and review lesson plans,
as well as discuss logistics.
During the residencies, professional teaching artists will go into classrooms for four sessions
prior to students seeing shows at The ArtsCenter, and then one session following the shows for
wrap-up and reflection. On the final day of the residencies, classroom teachers co-teach
alongside teaching artists, and parents/families are invited into classrooms to observe what their
children have been learning. This provides professional development for classroom teachers so
they can use these new instructional strategies on a daily basis, and it helps parents/families
feel connected to what their children are doing in school. Once the residencies have concluded,
the same group of people meets once again to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and
make any necessary adjustments moving forward. In addition, grade levels often times
incorporate the material from the residencies into parent nights, family sharing events or even
district-wide events. For example, this past year kindergarten students from Central Elementary
performed an African dance from their residency on stage at Cultural Explosion, a district-wide
event.
The residencies, as well as the corresponding shows students see at The ArtsCenter, are all
carefully aligned with curriculum. For example, in 2017, fourth graders at Central Elementary
learned about the victories and struggles of Dr, Martin Luther King, Jr, with Teaching Artist Anita
Woodley. Through theatre improvisation, these significant events were highlighted with hands-
on activities and examples that students could utilize in today's world. Students learned how to
increase their self-awareness and knowledge through theatrical improvisational exercises,
writing, and post discussion about kindness and resolving conflicts.
In order to ensure teachers are also learning new instructional strategies to teach curriculum
they can implement after the residency is over, they will also participate in at least one school-
wide professional development workshop on arts integration each year. During the workshops,
teaching artists will work with teachers on specific arts integration strategies to teach specific
curriculum concepts. Principals and school leadership teams will choose the specific curriculum
and art foci for the workshops, and often times will choose concepts that tend to be difficult to
students when learning via traditional teaching methods. The workshops support teachers,
providing them with tools and resources to incorporate arts integration into their daily instruction,
Artists Involved in the Project
While the specifics of the residencies cannot be planned until the start of the school year, The
ArtsCenter uses a core group of teaching artists who have extensive experience working in
schools and have worked through The ArtsCenter's Artist in Residence program in past years.
All artists have also completed an extensive application and attended a Teaching Artist Training
Workshop at The ArtsCenter prior to being chosen as a core artist. This is to ensure all artists
working through the program understand the mission and goals and so the coordinator can
