Central Elementary is a Title 1, preK-5,
school near downtown Hillsborough with approximately 275 students and is a designated
Engineering Excellence school. ,Efland-Cheeks Global Elementar, is a Title 1, preK-5, school
located in Efland with approximately 416 students. Global studies are integrated throughout the
curriculum and provide students opportunities to connect with people and cultures from across
the globe through a project-based learning environment. Grady Brown Elementary is a newly
identified Title 1, preK-5, school located in Hillsborough with approximately 506 students, and a
growing number of ESL students. All four schools have Art and Music special area classes, which
students visit once per week to learn concepts covered in the Arts Education Essential Standards.
Any additional in-school art programs or experiences are funded by individual school PTAs
through their Cultural Arts budgets. Programs funded through PTA Cultural Arts usually include
whole school performances and/or grade level residencies; however, funding residencies is
challenging for these schools whose PTA Cultural Arts budgets are often less than $2,000 for the
entire year.
Summary of Proposed Project
In the 2017-2018 school year, approximately 1,800 kindergarten through fifth grade students at
New Hope Elementary, Central Elementary, Efland-Cheeks Global Elementary and Grady
Brown Elementary will participate in curriculum-integrated art residencies with professional
teaching artists. This program, implemented in partnership with The ArtsCenter, strives to give
children opportunities to learn curriculum through non-traditional teaching methods, thus
catering to varied learning styles and creating exciting, engaging learning opportunities. Many
components of the program also bring parents/families into the experience as well, thus creating
an even deeper impact that far exceeds learning in the classroom.
All grade levels in each participating school - 24 total - will have professional teaching artists
come into their classrooms for five sessions, during which time the artists will teach specific
curriculum concepts through chosen art forms. In conjunction with these residencies, students
will also go to The ArtsCenter to see a show that correlates to the work they are doing in their
classrooms. The shows, residency art forms and curriculum foci will all be chosen by classroom
teachers with guidance from The ArtsCenter's Arts in Education Coordinator, who will manage
the program.
This will be the seventh year the Artist in Residence program will be implemented with all Title 1
elementary schools in the district, and the tenth year since initial implementation with the first
Title 1 school when the program began.
Project Goals
The Artist in Residence program is an Arts in Education program that integrates the arts into the
grade level curriculum. The following are goals of the program:
