Description of Artists involved in the Project
Donovan Zimmerman (caucasian) is one of the founders and directors of the Paperhand
Puppet Intervention, a puppet theater company based in Saxapahaw, North Carolina.
For nearly 20 years, he has helped create original, large-scale puppet shows that "tell
stories of the human heart, illuminate myths from around the world, and inspire young
and old alike through their unique brand of creative expression." (http://paperhand.org)
Last year, their summer shows were attended by more than 18,000 people. And based
on his artistic merit, Donovan is invited to perform and host puppet-making workshops
around the world. Tarish Pipkins (African-American) is a self-taught artist and has been
creating art from a very young age, including paintings and poetry. He added puppetry
to his skill set and for almost 10 years, has been working with Paperhand Puppet
Intervention.
Donovan and Tarish were selected based on the amazing experience when they
performed for our community last fall thanks to an Orange County Arts Commission
grant. Scroggs students, staff, and families were deeply impacted by this event.
Following last year's performance, our Gifted Education Specialist remarked, "I could
see the amazing level of engagement with the students. They were excited, motivated,
and entranced by the puppets. The questions the students asked were a reflection of
their great interest. And the message that you can make a living as an artist, and that
puppetry provides so many avenues of expression was very powerful." They also reflect
the diversity in the art community and the need for many different voices.
The fee ($2,500) reflects the artists' rates for an artist-in-residence and a school-wide
performance. Supplies for the project ($250) will be funded by the Scroggs Parent-
Teacher Association (PTA).
8. Plans for Publicizing the Project
Information about this exciting, year-long endeavor will be sent home at the beginning of
the school year via paper and online class newsletters to families with students in
grades 2-5. Before the event, our principal will announce the artist performance in her
weekly phone and email message to invite Scroggs families to attend the show.
Information about the student performance at Frogfest will be included in all paper and
online announcements, as well as principal messages, about the year-end event.
9. Project Evaluation
Following the performances, the Scroggs Art Teacher will conduct a brief online survey
(including comment fields) of teachers and staff to determine level of interest in and
benefits of the school-wide performances. She will also survey the students who
participated in the workshops with Donovan (those in grades 2-5) to measure their level
of engagement and impacts based on their new skills and accomplishments. This
qualitative data will be used to determine how the Scroggs arts program can help meet
the needs of our community through guest artists and hands-on learning.
