Description of Project Location
The workshops to be led by Donovan Zimmerman will take place in the Scroggs art
studio. Artist and teacher Sarah Corneae has shaped the art studio to reflect choice-
based learning where students can work on different kinds of projects in the same room,
often collaboratively. The studio itself is carefully set up to invite students to create, with
inspiring art, clear directions, and supplies organized so they may get what they need
when they need it Structures and routines support the students as artists, from the
opening circle at the beginning of class where ideas and concepts are shared, to the
cleanup and sharing time during the last few minutes of class where critical-thinking
skills are developed and community is supported.
The school-wide performance by the Paperhand Puppet Intervention artists and the
puppet exhibition by our fifth graders will both be held in the Scroggs gym and cafeteria.
When the diving wall between our cafeteria and gymnasium is folded up, the space will
provide the space needed for a school-wide assembly of approximately 600 students
and staff, or a community event with enough seats for Scroggs families and friends.
6. Explanation of Project Activities
Activities related to this project include:
o Artist Workshop #1 (puppet design): Donovan will guide students through the
process of designing puppets to express a folktale, which will be selected in
collaboration with the Scroggs Music Teacher who coordinates Frogfest. (Students
will collaboratively design and create paper-mache sculptural components for the
puppets before the next workshop.)
o Artist Workshop #2 (puppet construction): Donovan will demonstrate and work with
the kids on a variety of construction techniques, including mechanical movement via
rods and attaching objects. (Students will collaboratively construct the bodies of the
puppets before the next workshop.)
o Artist Workshop #3 (costuming/set design): Donovan will show students a variety of
ways to costume the puppet bodies, as well as discuss set design. (Students will
then collaboratively complete their puppets and plan out the set design.)
o Artist Performance: Donovan and Tarish will perform a puppet show for the entire
Scroggs community, as well as discuss and demonstrate the challenging, yet
rewarding, aspects of performing with large-scale puppets.
o Student Performance: Fifth-grade students will showcase the puppet collaborations
during the annual Frogfest event in late May, which is attended by all students, staff,
and families and friends of Scroggs.
