PROJECT NARRATIVE
1. Description of Organization
Mary Scroggs Elementary School (Scroggs) is a vibrant and diverse school, educating
504 students who speak 13 different languages. Our mission is "(t)hrough consistent
effort and growth, every child will achieve and succeed!" The school's leadership team
(12 members - 92% female; 25% African-American) is comprised of administrators,
teachers, and staff, including the principal, assistant principal, lead teachers for each
grade, lead enrichment teacher, our reading and math specialist, our literacy specialist,
and lead cultural arts teacher. The Scroggs staff work together to meet the goals of
promoting the academic achievement of all students, providing enrichment and support
so all students can reach their full potential, and enhancing appreciation of the school's
cultural diversity and social responsibility. We host several evening events annually that
bring together staff, students, parents, and extended family members, including Literacy
Night, Multicultural Night, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math)
Night.
Scroggs' arts programs include weekly visual arts and music classes for all students,
use of our STEAM Lab/Makerspace by each class at least twice per quarter, and our
annual arts festival ("Frog Fest") at which all students perform and celebrate music, art,
and theater. In addition, local artists mentor 4th graders, chorus is offered once a week
for 5th graders, and a free afterschool art club each fall and spring allows 4th and 5th
graders to collaboratively design and create artwork. Past art club projects include a
4'W x 7'H mixed-media mosaic of quotes and mementos reflecting the many cultures of
the Scroggs community.
2. Project Summary
Puppetry is a unique art form because it involves so many different aspects of
expression, including storytelling, music composition, design, construction, mechanical
engineering, decoration, and dramatic performance. As much of the story is
communicated without words, puppetry is cross-cultural, thereby touching on the human
experience and connecting to many at the same time
This project will support an artist-in-residence for the 2017-2018 school year with
Donovan Zimmerman, co-founder and director of Paperhand Puppet Intervention, to
share his knowledge and experience in puppetry with our entire school. Through a
series of hands-on workshops to be led by Donovan, Scroggs students in grades 2-5
will collaboratively design, construct, decorate, and master the mechanics of performing
with large-scale puppets. The culmination of the student workshops will be a puppet
parade led by 5th grade students during our annual cultural arts festival in May called
Frogfest (named for the school mascot, the "Scroggs Frogs"). In addition, this project
will support a school-wide performance by Donovan Zimmerman and Tarish Pipkins of
Paperhand Puppet Intervention to share the art and joy of puppetry with every student
at Scroggs, teachers and staff, and the broader Scroggs community.
