I have observed and engaged with her in
several settings and roles. I can speak with assurance about her abilities.
In 2014 Pam assumed the role of cohost, with Stan Absher, of the Flyleaf Books Second Thursday
Poetry Reading Series, one of the premier poetry reading series in the Triangle. As a regular attendee, I
observed her professional, warm manner of introducing readers and running the open mic. The
artistry of her poetry, familiar to me through her open mic contributions, is compelling.
I have attended numerous reading events Pam has organized at the Hillsborough Public Library. She
has an uncanny ability to select a topic and invite poets whose work not only addresses the topic but
compliments and meshes with each others' work. She selects the order of the four readers wisely and
makes helpful introductions. After the readings Pam invites questions and open discussion. The
readings have become important, well-attended occasions in the Triangle poetry community.
I have been a participant in many of Pam's Saturday afternoon poetry workshops at the Hillsborough
Public Library and one of her classes at the Seymour Center. I am a teacher. In my working life I have
observed and critiqued many teachers. Pam is a singularly talented teacher. She is that rare breed, an
encourager who quietly inspires. She arrives with deep knowledge and broad preparation. She
provides a handout of poems illustrative of the topic and ideas for writing. She prepares her remarks
and exercises with deliberate care, opening up the topic in a clarifying, inclusive manner. Unlike many
writing workshop leaders, Pam provides context, information, and a wealth of ideas for further
exploration. She is, in other words, a generous teacher.
Six months ago I replaced Stan Absher as cohost of the Flyleaf Books series mentioned above. Pam
and I alternate months introducing the two featured poets and running the open mic, but there's
considerable behind-the-scenes work involved in the successful running of this operation:
coordinating with the bookstore, inviting poets with new books, scheduling at least six months in
advance, communicating with the readers, sending out mass email invites and publicity, running a
yearly competition, throwing book launches. Pam is unfailingly reliable, responsible, good-humored,
and prompt.
I highly recommend Pam Baggett, without reservation. Please feel free to contact me with any
questions.
Sincerely,
Joan Barasovska, M.Ed.
9I9-967-9670
