Please give a brief description of your organization, including mission, board and staff
composition, current arts programs and services and number and kinds of people
served. Public schools and other large governmental or community agencies should
provide a description of their arts program only rather than the entire organization. (250
words or less)
Founded in 1958, Estes Hills Elementary School is one of the oldest schools in the
Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district. Estes Hills is a neighborhood school in the
truest sense, as many students from the surrounding homes walk or bike to school every
day. In the current academic year (2016-2017), Estes Hills Elementary serves 509
children from kindergarten through fifth grade. The school has 22 traditional classrooms,
and offers programs in Exceptional Education, Gifted Education, and English as a Second
Language. In 2012, a Head Start pre-school program was added to the campus and it
currently serves 14 children. Our student body is fairly evenly divided along gender lines
(278 Male / 231 Female), and has a diverse racial composition: White (54%), Hispanic
(16%), Black (10%), Asian (11%), and Multi-Racial (9%).
Estes Hills offers Art and Music instruction in accordance with the North Carolina
Standard Course of Study for elementary school students, with a full-time professional in
each "specials" discipline: Art, Music, French, and Physical Education (which incorporates
Dance).
The mission of the Estes Hills PTA is to serve the whole community of the school - the
students, teachers, staff and families - by providing necessary resources to support the
highest quality educational environment possible. The PTA is comprised of parent
volunteers (Executive Board is 83% female, 100% Caucasian), and seeks to promote the
cultural arts in education by bringing professional artists to perform at our school.
2. Offer a brief summary of the proposed project.
We will use the grant to fund a portion of the artists' fees for 3 artists for 6 performances
during the 2017-2018 school year: Donna Washington (week of January 8-12/$1400 for
two performances, one for K-2nd & one for 3rd-5th); Hobey Ford's Golden Rod Puppets
(February 5-9 week/$1500 for two performances, one for K-2nd & one for 3rd-5th); Ken
Waldman (March 19-23 week/$1500 for two performances, one for K-2nd & one for 3rd-
5th).
3. State your project's goals.
Over the past few years, income to our PTA and thus the Cultural Enrichment budget has
decreased. This has been due in part to a decrease in the sustaining funds historically
provided by the PTA Thrift Shops, and a decline in state funding for education (which has
resulted in greater demands on the PTA's budget). Combined with rising costs, we have
only been able to fund 3 performers this year (and projected for next year) as opposed to
