She worked in historic architecture preservation for twenty-six <br /> years, during which she first directed the State Historic Preservation Office's <br /> National Register program and later was in charge of the Historic Architecture <br /> Section of the NC Department of Transportation. That section produced parts <br /> of environmental impact statements and ensured compliance with relevant laws <br /> and regulations. She has published a number of articles on historic architecture. <br /> She has served on the Hillsborough Historic District Commission and <br /> currently is on the board of directors of the Hillsborough Preservation Fund. <br /> • Pip Merrick, a thirty-year resident of Hillsborough, earned her BM in music <br /> theory from Manhattan School of Music and her MS and PhD in cell biology <br /> from New York University. She came to UNC Medical School for a post- <br /> graduate fellowship in burn surgery, then served as an instructor of physiology <br /> and comparative anatomy in the UNC Biology Department. She has served on <br /> the Hillsborough Planning Board, Arts Council, Tree Board, and the Affiance <br /> for Historic Hillsborough. <br /> • Jim Parsley is a Hillsborough native who moved away to pursue an engineering <br /> education at Duke University, followed by a thirty-seven-year career with <br /> Procter & Gamble, where he held five jobs in four different states. He and his <br /> wife moved back to Hillsborough in 2003 and contribute in many ways to the <br /> community. He participates in activities and groups at St. Matthew's Episcopal <br /> Church, and maintains a keen interest in local history and historic preservation. <br /> • Mary Ann Peter earned a PhD in education from the University of North <br /> Carolina at Chapel Hill and BS and MS degrees in nursing from Duke <br /> University. She was on the faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing for <br /> ten years and held a variety of positions in nursing at Duke University Hospital <br /> for twenty-five years, including that of director of nursing. She received <br /> numerous awards and honors during her nursing career, wrote a number of <br /> articles in professional journals, and holds a patent for a medical device.
