The school maintains a dual enrollment <br /> relationship with area colleges and actively collaborates with various community agencies and <br /> organizations. They have a vibrant cultural arts program at the oohoV|, including theatna, ohorua, <br /> band, and art. For a third year Cedar Ridge High School will host the district-wide event— <br /> Cultural Explosion — in April 2018. which is designed to bring cultural awareness to students and <br /> families in the Orange County Schools' district. With collaboration from many cultural arts and <br /> world languages teachers in the district, the event has grown over the years into a culturally-rich <br /> learning experience for hundreds of students and their families. <br /> Summary of Proposed Project <br /> On April 26, 2018 Cedar Ridge High School will host Cultural Explosion, an Orange County <br /> Schools' district-wide event, for students and families within the [)range County Schools' district. <br /> Cultural Explosion will bring together all schools - elementary through high - in Orange County <br /> and the surrounding communities to celebrate and explore diverse cultures from around the <br /> world on a very deep level through hands-on experiences while building connections within the <br /> community. Funding from the Orange County Arts Commission will support two artistic pieces of <br /> Cultural Explosion - Flor y Canto and The Scrap Exchange. Flor y Canto is a Mexican folkloric <br /> music group that showcases Latin American culture through music, instruments and artistic <br /> traditions. During Cultural Enp|ooion, they will perform for students and families to provide <br /> another lens for understanding Mexican culture. The Scrap Exchange is a nonprofit organization <br /> with a mission to promote creativity, environmental awareness, and community through reuse. <br /> They provide a sustainable supply of high-quality, low-cost materials for artists, educotora, <br /> parenta, and children. During Cultural Explosion, their workshop leaders will help students and <br /> families transform dean, reusable industrial discards into inventions for science, hats and <br /> costumes for plays, games and toys for fun, and much more. <br /> Project Goals <br /> The goals of Cultural Explosion are: <br /> • to provide an avenue for students and famflies to explore and learn about diverse <br /> cultures, which directly links to many Social Studies standards, thus enhancing <br /> academic proficiency <br /> • to allow students and families from diverse cultures to share their own traditions and <br /> experiences with others so they feel they have something to offer, which in turn makes <br /> them feel more connected to their schools and local communities <br /> • to provide an accessible learning opportunity to all students and families regardless of <br /> income <br /> • to build connections and relationships with members of the community <br />
