The museum focuses on 4 broad themes within its exhibits and programs—the arts,
STEM/STEAM education, child health and wellness and emerging literacy. Every aspect of the
current museum was created and built locally, and is infused with the creativity of area artists,
craftspeople, scientists and educators who are passionate about nurturing a child's creativity
and learning through play. The majority of these Curating Creativity workshops will occur in our
Makery, the heartbeat of Kidzu that is dedicated to "maker education." Workshops will
occasionally extend into the larger museum space and program room.
6. Explain all project activities.
Kidzu will host at least one creativity workshop/day of activities per month for 12 months with
12 or more visiting creative professionals during the project year. Each professional will work
with Kidzu to develop an interactive workshop or all-day activity that will engage children and
families in "co-creating." While the focus will be primarily on exploring the creative process,
projects may have both a take-home element and a creative work developed collaboratively.
The 'Curating Creativity'programs include: Mix it Up and Makery Masterpieces.
• Mix It Up in The Makery involves local artists, scientists, and makers bringing their
special expertise to The Makery
• Makery Masterpieces programs connects a local artist, craftsperson, and scientist to
Kidzu visitors through the creation of a project based on the Master's area of expertise.
7. Describe all artists to be involved in the project, how and why they were chosen, and the
rate of payment for their services. If you have not yet selected the artists, describe the kinds
of artists you intend to involve and how you will select them. (Schools, please indicate if you
are working with The ArtsCenter's Arts in School program to secure your artists). Please
include the ethnicity of artists or instructors hired for the project.
Kidzu has implemented the Curating Creativity since opening in our space in University Place,
April 2015. Initial funding came from Strowd Roses with matching funds provided by the Oak
Foundation.
We've welcomed many guest specialists throughout the last two years partnering with well over
40 local artists, scientists and professionals. Each visiting specialist created innovative activities
and workshops that equally thrilled and challenged our visitors. For example, Stephanie Person
constructed flying machines with the children and Anna Podris created encaustic travel inspired
postcards.
