More than twenty years of teaching experience with elementary,teenage, college level <br /> students, and adults, he has a proven track record. He combines strong communication skills with <br /> artistic sensitivity to positively contribute to a classroom, workshop, and seminar audience. His <br /> work explores issues of community and culture in America, and has been acclaimed by the media <br /> and critics across North Carolina. Some of the journals <br /> "*fri his poems have appeared in include The American Voice, Obsidian, <br /> and The Louisville Review. <br /> Teaching Artist <br /> In 1997, Shabazz became Duke University's third Artist-in-Residence at the Mary Lou Williams <br /> Center for Black Culture. During his four-year residency, (1997-2001)he organized both a student <br /> art collective, and a twice monthly speaker's series which presented local and nationally known <br /> poets and writers.Prior to this time period,he was on the artist roster with the Durham Arts Council <br /> and the NC Arts Council from 1994 to 1997. <br /> Currently he conducts creative writing seminars workshops across his home state of North <br /> Carolina, and has taught at over 400 schools, conferences, and community centers. He has also <br /> been a visiting writer at many colleges and universities including UNC-Chapel Hill, Elon, <br /> Winthrop, Warren Wilson, and the Writers Series at Appalachian State. <br /> Shabazz lives in Chapel Hill,NC, and continues to reach approximately 12,000 people annually <br /> through his work as a poet,teacher, and writer at the grassroots and in the community at-large. <br />
