Thiah000tnengthenedtheoxpariencefortheatudentsbecouse <br /> the classroom teachers have been able to use some of the strategies they learned from the <br /> residency in previous years. <br /> Artists Involved in the Project <br /> Phillip Shabazz is an African-American poet, author and educator who has taught at more than <br /> 400 sohoo|s, conferences and community centers. His work, which explores issues of <br /> community and culture, has been acclaimed b v the nedim, critics, and audience across North CGn)|ino. He writes poetry from a wide range <br /> vievvpoints, including poems about family and <br /> friends, life challenges and the celebration of human possibilities. He has been a visiting writer <br /> at many colleges and universities including UNC-Chapel MiU, Elon, Winthrop, Warren Wilson <br /> and the Writers' Series at Appalachian State. He has published four books of poems: Flames in <br /> the Fina. Freestyle and Visitation, When the Grass Was Blue and XYZoom. <br /> Phillip Shabazz was chosen for this residency because he is extremely well respected in the <br /> literary cornnlun)ty, and teachero, many at Hillsborough E|ennentmry, find his work with children <br /> to be high impact. The cost for this residency is $1,300, which equates to $65/hour for 20 <br /> contact hours. This residency is not part of The Arts Center's Artist in Residence program. <br /> Publicity and Promotion of Project <br /> The Hillsborough Elementary PTA will publicize the residency on the Weekly Wire, an electronic <br /> newsletter sent out at the beginning of each week. Fourth grade teachers will also include the <br /> residency information in their weekly classroom newsletters and on their class web sites. In <br /> addition, Phillip Shabazz provides packets for students to take home during the residency so <br /> families can be involved in the experience. <br /> Project Evaluation <br /> Fourth grade classroom teachers will conduct informal assessments following the residency to <br /> assess student understanding of poetry. In addition, teachers will meet and discuss the <br /> residency as a grade level, taking note of what they observed from their class in regard to <br /> student engagement levels, academic impact and confidence levels. They will also analyze <br /> which teaching strategies they can use more consistently in their classrooms to extend learning <br /> beyond the residency sessions. <br />
