onnunign Envelope ID:o1sr1F2o-9AaE-*1so-Aaoa-4xoA1n42oc1n <br /> Spring 2017 Grassroots Program Grant <br /> Orange County Arts Commission <br /> Application Narrative <br /> Description of School Arts Program <br /> The Hillsborough Elementary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a porent-baaad, <br /> vo|unteer, non-profit that supports Hillsborough Elementary School, etudenta, porente, and <br /> staff. The PTA is open to all parents and teachers and is headed by elected officers and a PTA <br /> executive board. PTA projects provide valuable services and events for our school's atudents, <br /> fonni|iea, and teachers and is led by nine committees, including Cultural Arts. The Cultural Arts <br /> program brings professional artists (visual artiata, rnueioians, authors, theatre artiato, etc.) into <br /> classrooms through residencies and school-wide perfornnanoea, as well as supports cultural <br /> arts' experiences outside the classroom through grade level field trip funding support. The <br /> committee also works alongside classroom teachers to plan art-based experiences that connect <br /> to curriculum and serves as the liaison between the artists and teachers. In addition, the <br /> committee recruits parent volunteers to help with cultural arts activities. <br /> Summary of Proposed Project <br /> Poet and Teaching Artist Phillip Shabazz will work with approximately 80 fourth grade students <br /> at Hillsborough Elementary in late August 2017 to explore poetry and prose. The residency is <br /> linked to the fourth grade Language Arts curriculum standards in Literature. Foundational Skills, <br /> Writing and Language and will provide students with opportunities to reod, analyze and write <br /> poetry during a concentrated period of time with a professional artist. <br /> Project Goals <br /> The goals for the fourth grade poetry residency with Phillip Shabazz are: <br /> • To increase students' understanding of poetry and prose in connection with the fourth <br /> grade Language Arts curriculum standards <br /> • To increase student engagement and ignite excitement about poetry <br /> • To give students opportunities to support and celebrate each other's work <br /> • To provide classroom teachers with a professional development opportunity to learn new <br /> strategies for teaching poetry <br /> Description of Participants and Audience <br /> Hillsborough Elementary, located in close proximity to downtown Hi||eborough, is the only year- <br /> round elementary school in the Orange County Schools' district. There are approximately 476 <br /> students at the school, 253 males and 214 females, and 17% receive free or reduced lunch. In <br /> fourth grode, hovvever, where the residency will take place, 21% of students receive free or <br /> reduced lunch. The following is a breakdown of the racial and cultural composition of the school <br /> as a whole.
