DocuSign Envelope ID:70E97245-CBDE-4A68-90A8-9FB875F7C092
Artist Project Grant Free form Weaving for Senior Citizens
Narrative
My name is Dawn Hummer and I am applying for an Artist Project Grant for the first
time this year (2017-2018). My proposal for the Project Grant called "Free Form
Weaving for Senior Citizens" would allow me to more broadly reach out to the
Senior community with Orange County, in an ongoing attempt to facilitate
community and joyful creative expression through weaving
The funding of the project would accommodate a purchase of 8 smaller more
portable looms and additional fiber to transport to the Seymour Center Senior
facility once per month, as the Senior Service Center of Orange County
(organizational partner) has asked me to extend throughout the year, my classes in
weaving. The smaller looms would allow for larger class sizes and continued
programming in weaving, as the 4 heavy floor looms are becoming more difficult to
collapse and safely transport each month. The creative weaving classes have
become larger and are now ongoing over the winter and spring months, occurring
once per month.
With the addition of 8 new smaller looms, we could plan for a rich variety of ongoing
classes to meet the needs of the growing interest in weaving, within the large
weaving community here in Orange County. The classes then could serve up to 8
participants at a time, and foster camaraderie, care and creativity within the group.
As a hand weaver with a small home teaching studio, I am committed to facilitating
the joy of creative expression through the art of weaving, within the local
community. While my home studio does not allow full access to the broader
community, traveling and teaching fiber arts remotely allows me to combine my
love of weaving with my background in teaching children and adults with
disabilities. Some of my recent presentations and volunteer weaving classes within
the Triangle area have included: Triangle Weaving Guild, Sandhills Weaving Guild,
Orange County Senior Services (Memory Café and Sr. Citizens arts classes), Saori
weaving classes.
Recently awarded the designation of Saori Weaving Studio (from Saorinomori in
Osaka, Japan), I strive to connect persons without regard to physical or mental
ability with an ergonomic and joyful creative experience in free form weaving.
The Saori style of weaving celebrates the unique and individual creative spark
within each of us as we enjoy texture, color and the process of hand weaving on
floor and table looms. Each loom is threaded with an assortment of colorful fibers,
which then becomes the canvas for individual creative designs to be woven onto the
loom. Simple rigid heddle looms are ergonomic and easy to manipulate on the lap
or clamped to the tabletop. Individual projects can be taken home after one class or
continued on to the next class if desired. Modifications in both instruction and
physicality of weaving can be made as needed. The process is enjoyable and
