Mikey first told me Hardy's story
while standing at the door, ry keys in his hand,
after pumping more gas, car after car
as the rations went low. Our town, back home,
a hundred miles away—was gone.
At the s my brother saw Hardy on the TV.
His face was crumpled like a sorrowful puzzle.
didn't know what to do but sit there 'watching his.face„
as though my watching might change the ending,
The reporter was broken by her own tears too,,
he said, and lost the rest of the story. He also said
Hardy's story started,like v iost,with a house,
though cracked in half by a tree—and that Hardy's wife
was all Hardy ever had I didn't know then,
like I don't know now, what ;Lardy must have felt
when his fingers went slack, that storm inside their home„
that storm and their child held tight,in one hand
when his wife was released from the other.
K.
