Location
All seven of the music education concerts will take place at Meymandi Concert Hall in the Duke Energy
Center for the Performing Arts Center located in downtown Raleigh.Transportation to and from the
venue will be coordinated by school teachers and administrators°
6. Detailed Description
In its holistic approach, the NCS provides a five-hour teacher training workshop at Meymandi Concert
Hall in Raleigh where fellow teachers present the program and lesson plans for the education concert.
Teachers receive a recording of the concert, as well as the Teacher Handbook containing interactive
lesson plans, fun music games and introductions to great composers and their works. The training
presentation and materials assist teachers in preparing their students for the classroom study objectives
and concert experience. Teachers receive 0.5 CEU credits from their district for completing the training.
New this year, the NCS offered a second workshop in Sampson County. In addition, to reach teachers in
rural communities and distant counties with little to no travel budget„ the entire five-hour training
course is available online. All materials, including the Student Workbook and all classroom materials, are
avariable online and may be downloaded at no cost.
School teachers also have access to the Symphony's comprehensive education curriculum to introduce
their classes to the building blocks of music. The curriculum is developed each year by the Symphony's
artistic leadership, a group of educators from across the state, and members of the North Carolina
Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). The program is designed to support the learning objectives for
music for grades 3-5 which are outlined in the NC Standard Course of Study.
Centered on the theme "What Makes Music MUSIC?"the concerts will introduce students to exciting
works from diverse composers and teach them about the six fundamentals of music; melody, tempo,
dynamics, rhythm, texture and form. Led by one of the Symphony's engaging conductors, performances
are designed to be as entertaining as they are educational. The hour-long program is full of interactive
activities with the orchestra, including question-and-answer sessions that prompt students to listen for
and identify important elements of each piece. To make this concert meaningful and memorable, local
teachers will prepare their students to sing a piece with the orchestra.
7.Artists Involved
The NCS music education concerts are performed by the entire 66-member orchestra which consists of
highly-talented musicians that have been chosen through a rigorous audition process. All Symphony
musicians are selected by an audition corrirnittee that consists of current orchestra members, NCS
Artistic Department staff and Music Director Grant Llewellyn.
8. Publicity& Promotion
The Symphony's Director of Education,Sarah Baron, works directly with Orange County and Chapel Hill-
Carrhoro arts coordinators and administrators to schedule and communicate all details regarding their
school attending a music education concert.
Overall, the North Carolina Symphony utilizes a diverse range of platforms to promote and oublicim its
programs such as print &radio advertisements, esblasts, monthly mailers, and social media,
