We would like
to invite Nicholas Chatfield-Taylor to be the first artist in residence at Level Retreat, located at 1465
Smith Level Road in Chapel Hill. Level LLC, established just over a year ago, has been working
tirelessly to convert a historic 14 acre Chapel Hill property into an oasis for multidisciplinary artists to
temporarily live, work, and be inspired to produce enduring works. We have already renovated a two
bedroom cabin (The "Scout House", a former boyscout cabin) which overlooks a tobacco barn from
the early 1800s. There are pastures, wooded trails, and a tranquil private lake on site. We believe
that the property, in addition to all of the other unique social and cultural amenities of Orange County,
will make an inspirational working environment for Mr. Chatfield-Taylor, and future artists in years to
come.
If awarded, the Artist Project Grant would assist in the development of a sculpture installation and
sound performance event, to be enjoyed by the residents of and visitors to Orange County during a
dedicated weekend prior to June 30th, 2018. Our goal is to celebrate the vibrant local art scene and
raise awareness of opportunities for creatives within the community.
Mr. Chatfield-Taylor plans to expand his impressive national portfolio of wooden, igloo-like
installations with a new and unique structure, which will permanently reside in Orange County.
A premiere of the work will be revealed in a centralized public location (most likely in downtown
Carrboro). While the sculptural shelter will be visually intriguing on its own, it will also be outfitted with
an FM transmitter and double as a sound installation. Short range broadcasts of pre-recorded audio
compilations, as well as intimate soundscapes performed by local musicians over the course of a
weekend, will further promote attendance and enhance the community's experience. Visitors drawn to
the igloo will receive information about the participating artists, The Orange County Arts Commission,
and Level Retreat. Local businesses in walking distance of the exhibit will have an opportunity to
promote themselves as well, with coupons or other enticing giveaways as they see fit. Additionally,
one lucky winner will be chosen from a free on-site raffle for a weekend vacation at Level Retreat, to
be redeemed within one year's time.
After the public performance has taken place downtown, the igloo will be transported back to Level
Retreat where it was created. The sculptural installation will be nestled into the landscape to provide
a shady place for visiting artists to rest and contemplate their work. This will be the first of many
outdoor pieces to help inspire artists to visit Orange County and the retreat in pursuit of their own
creative endeavors.
1165 SMITH LEVEL RD.
