This past season, we also produced shows in the Town of Chapel Hill's Teen Center and
the Community Ch,..ieh of Chapel Hill Unitarian Universalist. Unfortunately, one of One Song's
most commonly used perfa mance spaces, the Common Ground Theater in Durham, closed this
past winter. We will therefore transition to other spaces, most often the Cairboro ArisCenter,
which has housed many productions in the past.
Activities
Each year, One on produces at least three fall-length productions directed by high
school students. One Song further provides technical students with opportunities to be creative.
and branch out without the confines of a school tech department. All design and construction is
headed by students, giving them the chance to apply technical knowledge they may have learned
elsewhere and take on full leadership positions usually regulated by school staff members,
thereby offering a glimpse at what it may be like to work professionally in the field of technical,
theatre.,
The three main season shows are proposed and chosen in early August, so currently those
titles arc undecided. For these shows, board member(s) serve as the directors and local student
artists participate as actors or technicians.
In addition to opportunities provided by shows, One Song also provides these students
who Join the Board of Directors with business and production experience. Board members see
and experience the elements of running a theatrical production company, They set budgets,
handle finances, write grant proposals, find and book rehearsal and performance spaces, and
maintain legal documents.
Participants
For each of One Songs productions, all area high school students can audition for an
acting role or volunteer to work a technical role,. Students audition for our plays throughout the
year. This year especially, spearheaded by one of our new board me,mbers, we are striving to
expand the diversity of One Song participants to include a more varied array of race, gender,
orientation, and socioeconomic background.
Because, all One Song participants are high se:hooters, those who choose to partake are
not compensated monetarily One Song operates thanks,. to the dedication of volunteers, be they
Board members, actors, or technicians.
FithlictOr
For every One Song production and event there is a bard member that conducts
publicity, mainly through social media and the 0..he Song website, Not only are functions like
auditions, open mics, and performances advertised through social media like Facebook and
Instagram„ but they are also promoted through Wayne Leonard's radio show Lights Up!and local
