As a
supplement or alternative to school-sponsored drama programs, Onc Song engages youth in
every step of the creative process and offers a range of opportunities for learning and growing in
the performing arts. One Song is run by a board of six to eight directors, all of whom are students
in the Durham-Chapel Hill area. The Board's aim is to provide students in the area with a fun,
creative, and educational experience working on extracurricular productions. Additionally, all
One Song events are produced, directed, and staged entirely by students from area high schools,
and colleges.
One Song produces at least five different shows a season (which tracks the academie
year), all of which are east and directed by high school students from Orange County and
beyond. Over its 15 year history, One Song has reached hundreds of students. Its success und
continued growth depends on the cormnunity's constant support and generosity.
During the 2017-18 season,.One Song intends to produce three main shows during the
fall, winter, and spring. These shows, directed by Board members, are proposed and chosen
through deliberation in early August. Because of this, it has not yet been decided what shows.
will be produced during the upcoming season. Also offered to the student community are
op old:unities to do technical work f'or each show, including props, costumes, and more.
One Song Productions is a valuable opportunity for students to expand their theatrical.
vision, making it an important part of the youth theatre community in Orange County and
beyond.
First and feremost, One Song's main goal is to provide students in the area with an
alternative to their school theatre programs, allowing them to ta<e,responsibility for acting,
production, and technical roles. Our company provides the community with a freedom of
expression not found anywhere else, where students ,.;,(aintain full creative control over their
projects. Furthermore, all of One Song's productions push the envelope, allowing students to
take on more challenging characters and content that they might not be exposed to in school, as
well as the opportunity to explore complex moral and ethical angles to modern issues.
With this grant, the One Song ;oard of Directors would continue to reach out to a broad
variety of high school students for acting ,.nd technical design, and it would give them the
opportunity to work on shows that deal with unique and important., issues. The Board of Directors
wants to share a love of theater and help other young artists work more on their theatrical skills,
while also allowing them to be involved in plays that make them think about what they, as
performers, are creating and communicating,
hitnnt,ed Audience
One Song strives to include students from all over Orange County, and our audience
reflects.that. As we have begun holding performances at the Carrboro ArtsCenter, our regular
