<br />According to the 200o U.S, Census Data, approximately 8,60o adults 25 years of age and older in <br />Orange County are in need of literacy services, This includes adults who have neither finished high <br />school nor received their GED. It does not include r8 to 25 year olds who meet this definition. <br />According to the Executive Director of the Orange County Literacy Council, there are a variety of <br />reasons for this number, including: <br />-Some students are in GED classes with a community college in the adjacent county and find they <br />need additional r:r assistance <br />-Other students are unable to participate in standard classes for a variety of reasons, such as work <br />schedules, childcare issues or learning disabilities that prohibit them from learning effectively in <br />larger settings. <br />Further, illiteracy is amulti-generational problem: Parents who don't read to their children for <br />whatever reason end up with children who are less likely to read to their children. According to <br />North Carolina Dept of Public Instruction, there is an indicator that children who don't read fluently <br />by 3rd grade have a propensity to drop out of school later with the highest dropouts occurring in 9th <br />grade.. <br />Since r984, the Orange County Literacy Council has developed and provided programs and trained <br />volunteers to assist adult learners to improve their reading, writing, basic math literacy skills and to <br />help with GED preparation.
